Thor: Ragnarok is the reason why Dark Phoenix is getting extensive reshoots?

Back in October Simon Kinberg said that the movie takes inspiration from Thor: Ragnarok. Except the original cut of Dark Phoenix finished filming before that movie released.

And New Mutants was said to be under extensive reshoots because of the success of IT. Making it more of a horror movie. It seems that Fox is playing the reactionary game like WB did with Suicide Squad.

So it's going to be a comedy?

New Mutants is a joke from top to bottom.

They keep flip flopping on the genre.

The director, Josh Boone, has stated that he isn't even a fan of horror movies. Who wants to see a horror movie from someone who looks down on the genre?

Their casting process involves getting whatever young actors happen to be trendy (a classic recipe for creating movies that age poorly), including Anya Taylor Joy, Maisie Williams, and the weird guy from Stranger Things

They hired Antonio Banderas to film a post-credits scene, to tease a sequel that will probably never happen due to the Disney/Fox merger

Speaking as someone who absolutely adored "Thor: Ragnarok" and would LOVE to see more movies like it... This is a terrible idea.

"TR" worked as a comedy because the Thor movies (and comics) were always slightly tongue-in-cheek, there were always comedic elements so exaggerating them and throwing in silly stuff worked, because the material was always slightly silly. This will not work with the X-Men, who are always one step from sadness and angst. Even if they throw in the occasional laugh line, it's dark humor, so getting as silly or random as "Ragnarok" is a recipe for disaster.

That is the reason for all the reshoots? Not 100% but I kinda doubt it. Considering the reshoots have been so extensive and have gone on for too long (for supposedly several reasons which include poor test screenings), then there could be many factors here. Having said that, according to Simon Ragnarok did indeed inspire Dark Phoenix. But no, it has nothing to do with its humor.

He said it’s fittingly taking a cue from Ragnarok this way...

It’s a movie that goes into space and is cosmic, very much inspired actually by what [Taika] did with Thor — even though the tone is totally different — but just the ability to make a character movie that still feels grounded, and fun, but is in a whole other universe
.

So for those that worried for a second that Dark Phoenix might be comical, relax. (A bit of well-intended humor wouldn’t hurt, though.) The cosmic aspect of Ragnarok is what Simon took big inspiration from, so it seems making Dark Phoenix more otherworldly and fun (basically embracing its more comic elements) but keeping it grounded and character driven is what the first time director set out to do..

As for Ragnarok, it goes without saying that some fans of the comics and Thor felt the last installment needed to be much more serious in tone (non-comic fans who find all the fantasy elements too ridiculous to appreciate... well that’s you) and that’s understandable. But what Taika did with that film ultimately payed off; we’ll have to wait and see if what Simon does with Dark Phoenix will work. Although as much as I hope Dark Phoenix delivers, when you take into account the messy production of the movie and the subsequent reports of it being in the same ballpark as 2015’s Fantastic Four, then it’s hard to feel that much excitement over it. We’ll see.

The reshoots for Dark Phoenix ended months ago. From what I heard the only thing that was significantly changed was the third act and they seemed to reshot Sophie’s scenes because she lost weight.

New Mutants isn't going to blow up the box office even a little bit. I don't know who's going to own the movie after merger, I don't know how that works, but if if Disney/Marvel does, they'd be better off making that exclusive to their streaming service launch. Especially if they retooled it into a horror theme. People love streaming that Stranger Things / Bird Box crap.
