Why did he not kill...

That highjacker in the cockpit? Leaving him alive knowing he could wake up at any moment was insanely stupid. He should have bashed him with that Fire extinguisher until he saw bone.

reply

That would have been wise, but not everyone is capable of killing someone, especially in cold blood.

reply

Not everyone is a murderer.
He secured him to the best of his abilities in a high-stress situation.
I'm worried about you if your initial response to high-stress is to bash someone's skull in.
You'll never know how you will react until it happens. Monday morning quarterbacking is a thing.

On the other hand, they made this other movie where the passengers immediately disarmed and detained the hijackers and the plane landed without incident. It was 15 minutes long and super-boring.
They made this movie instead.

"I'm worried about you if your initial response to high-stress is to bash someone's skull in."

And I'm worried that if you had an unconscious murderer sitting behind you who absolutely wants to kill you and hundreds(thousands depending on his ground target) of others, that you'd simply tie him up with a few straps, not even keep an eye on him, and roll the dice with all those lives.
And yes, I would have caved his head in and slept damned good that night.

reply

I said what I said because I'm "that guy". I've spent my whole life making sure I'm not "that guy" that feels nothing. I absolutely would have killed the person. But people can be better than me. I can be better. I don't hurt.
I go out of my way to not hurt. I do not harm. I know how it changes people. As such, I don't hit, I don't hurt. I must stay human. I must stay nice. I must stay kind.
If one loses their humanity, then why bother.
Yes though, I'd have done a better job of securing the jackass. I'm good with knots and I can put a person down if I have to.
I just choose to be nice. If I didn't, I couldn't live with myself.
I don't want to be my friend that used to sleep with a gun under his pillow so he could kill himself if the memories of war got too bad. I won't let myself go there.

Rambling story, but that's my point. We have to stay human. We also have to know how to secure people. It's not hard. You have a belt. You have a tie. A hog tie is secure, not harmful, and the person will not get out of it. It just takes two lengths to do it right or enough rope to make it.

reply

A. The man only had one good arm.
B. Most people don't know how to properly tie up a human being with a belt( I sure as hell don't)
C. Your little poem was cute, but completely unrealistic in the scenario he was in. When it's kill or be killed, you take your damned pick! That pilot basically fucked everyone on the plane and all the innocents on the ground. The only reason there weren't hundreds of innocent dead people was because one terrorist had a change of heart at the last second.

reply

Thank you for this post.

reply

Self-defense is not murder.

reply

If the guy was a terrorist and I knew he was intent on killing people if he got the opportunity I would kill him without hesitation and feel good about it because a lot of people's safety was assured. Self-defense and the defense of other innocent people is the moral thing to do.

reply

Most people can't commit murder even in most extreme situations.

reply

This situation doesn't fit the legal or moral definition of murder. This is clearly self defense and even the most cowardly human has that instinct built in.

Don't get me wrong, I have no desire to off anyone, and would gladly disable some psycho and let the law have him rather than killing the guy, but this was an extreme scenario. The pilot put a ton of lives at risk with his inaction.
