I may be wrong but I thought this show was supposed to be set in '82 or '83. If not and it is set in 1980 I guess the writers were just messing with the audience! Maybe they are hoping that there aren't a lot of hardcore trekkers like us who know when the Kobayashi Maru was introduced into the Star trek canon.

Still I am not sure how Sheldon considered some of moves as part of a "no win scenario". I mean that he could always check books out the library, he didn't have to sneak them out. Of course his way of getting out of gym class was priceless, wish I could've come up with some "health" problem like that. Although being female I couldn't use the hernia excuse! However I did have a few classmates who always seemed to be having their periods!!

reply

nope, they have said multiple times that it is 1989

reply

It take place in 1989. Sheldon is supposed to be born in 1980.

reply

Ah, okay, thanks for clarifying!

I think they jump around and throw things in regardless of how accurate it is because in one episode Mee-Maw was in a casino in Louisiana playing a slot machine, but we didn't get casinos here in Louisiana until about 1994 or 95.

reply

interesting, thanks!

reply

I didn't know that about your casinos either. But since the USA is so big, Hollywood can play fast and loose with a lot of details and no one from the other side of the country would know.

I used to watch thirtysomething. The characters lived in Philadelphia. One time there was a scene where they were shopping in a grocery store. Obviously it was a store in L.A. In the background you could see a big sign for "Beer and Wine". In Pennsylvania (where I live) you couldn't buy any alcohol in grocery stores, only liquor stores. They didn't sell beer either. You had to go to a separate store for beer. Just recently they have changed the rules a bit and I think you can buy beer and wine in convenience stores.

Jes' in your original post when you said "But they just referenced the Kobayashi Maru" liscarkat was saying that it should have read "But they just referred to the Kobayashi Maru" I do not know if that change is correct but that is what I believe was meant by liscarkat's post

reply

If someone has a problem with "reference" being used a verb, which happens a thousand times every day, they should also be good enough with language to explain themselves and this weird belief.

reply

I honestly do not know which is correct or even if there is a correct usage.

I also think that liscarkat could have been more direct with their response.

I just saw you questioned liscarkat's post and did not think to look at the post he replied to (your original post) and thought you should have been good enough to use context to figure it out. That is what I did.

reply

I knew all that, but I wanted the person to respond for themselves.

They never said 1980. When the season first started, they said 1989.
