Best Performance: Ann Dowd as AUNT LYDIA

I am not so familiar with her work (I keep mixing her up with other performers, like the foster spy mom from ORPHAN BLACK). Wikipedia says she was in LORENZO'S OIL years ago...and I imagine she played the sister-in-law, who I remember had some good, grounded moments (like when she tests the titular oil on a salad.) But in a vivid way, Ms. Dowd has reminded me how some people simply CAN ACT, and others are merely professional.

SHE IS SO GREAT IN THIS PART! She just totally inhabits the character and gives so much weight and distinction to her line readings, effortlessly. And it's not even like the character has all that much to say...though it seems to be elaborated on slightly from the book. This woman is wonderfully inhabiting the character.

It almost makes me wish the series were about her.

It's funny, because Elizabeth McGovern was also the most vivid thing about the tepid 1990 film version in another supporting role; she was very alive, and funny, as Moira. Every move she made seemed RIGHT.

Now I'm wishing there was some time glitch, and the 1990 McGovern could be in a spin-off with the 2017 Dowd in these roles, where the show's all about them. It's very rare to see performers cast so perfectly.

I found THIS, where some of Dowd's HANDMAID'S TALE castmates discuss working with her.

(EDIT: oh crap, i can't make old code to link anymore!)

(Probably Aunt Lydia's dastardly work!!)

She is one of the stand outs for me as well. The woman terrifies me. She just has that presence, like she is that person. And I love how she enunciates and speaks.

The way things are going in show business, we might get a spin off. "Better call Aunt Lydia"?

She played a pediatrician (that I don't remember at all) in Lorenzo's Oil.

reply

Ah! THANK YOU!

You know, there's some lengthy articles about that movie (like in old PREMIERE magazine) because the child who played Lorenzo gave a great audition...but his (divorcing) stage parents made him do it and he really did NOT want to act. He ended up being a full-on rebellious nightmare on the set and they had to shoot as much as they could with his stand in, without showing his face (!!!)

I've never heard of such a thing happening before.

So I rewatched the movie. She appears around minute 13 as a family pediatrician who treats Lorenzo for two accidents at Christmastime (fall off bike, tipping over Christmas tree). Total of about 2 minutes screen time.

reply

Totally, she's like Gilead's nurse Ratched. You know it's good acting when you feel genuine hatred for the actress haha.

reply

You absolutely HAVE to see her in The Leftovers. Her character is insanely brilliant. So much better than the role she has here.

reply

Agreed, though in The Leftovers she still strikes the same level of fear in those around her. In her kind moments I catch myself thinking that she's got ulterior motives behind that kindness; I don't believe she's genetically wired to be nice, and that's meant as a compliment to her acting abilities.

reply

I also agree. She's brilliant in The Leftovers. She's very good at making the audience so angry we want to kill her. But that is a compliment as well!

The best, most believable type of villain is one that believes he or she is in the right. Aunt Lydia, despite her cruelty, is such a villain.

reply

She's like a Nazi she really nails it.

reply

One of the scariest parts of the series is that as evil as she is, she is the only one who cares for the handmaids.
