They COMPLETELY botched the main villain!

Seriously? We go through the entire show with the plot revolving around the mind flayer and then all of a sudden the show takes a three year hiatus and this is the twist that they come up with?

Some low key wizard puppetmaster that they just introduced at the tail end of the show, has been manipulating a giant fucking sand spider this whole time?

How do you just sweep all of the build up of one of the coolest, most ominous bad guys under the rug by reducing it to nothing more than conjured fantasy by some psycho kid?

It felt so rushed and incoherent. No hinting of a big bad behind the mindflayer.
No subtle nods foreshadowing of a villain behind it throughout the entire series.

And then just out of nowhere, here's this new dude that we decided on making the main villain of season 4...oh and also he was secretly the bad guy this whole time since the beginning. Like they struggled to put a face to the upside down.

The upside down didn't need a face. It worked perfectly because the mindflayer HAD no motive. It was just this destructive force of nature that consumed. No different than a tornado.

This has got to be the worst retcon since all of season 8 of GOT.

That was my biggest problem with this season. The incomprehensible Lovecraftian nature of the mind flayer was the best part of the show. I don't think the audience ever needed to know any details about the upside down or the mind flayer, other than how to save Hawkins.

Instead, the big reveal is that the mind flayer is a superhuman serial killer from Eleven's past? I was entertained with this season, but this show has lost all suspense.

I'm not sure the explanations behind the villains are meant to be taken too seriously. The show itself is supposed to be like it was made in the 1980s. Like how many times was Jason supposd to be really really dead in the Friday the 13th movies?

Yeah, I would’ve preferred it if Vecna was an agent of the Mind Flayer, instead of the one controlling it. Like what Saruman was to Sauron in the Lord of the Rings, Vecna could’ve acted as a substitute for the Mind Flayer who doesn’t have much screen time. That way the main characters would have someone to interact with while the Mind Flayer remains as this eldritch force.

I don’t mind Vecna being someone from Eleven’s past, since it adds a personal stake to the story, but it ruins the mystery and cosmic horror aspect if he’s the true villain.

I disagree. I never cared much for the Mind Flayer as it seemed like just another monster, only really big. I liked the set up for 001.

Dustin said "Vecna is mind flayers 5 star general". but it was opposite

I do agree that the mind flayer should be the main villain. Vecna just some super abled evil dude. the mind flayer Is like some eternal evil that controls upside down world

he is not a low-key wizard

Then how was there no mention of him anywhere in the show up until season 4?

Gotta agree with you.

I agree with all that and thought this was really disappointing as well. I enjoyed the idea of the Mind Flayer just as a destructive force with no motive instead of Vecna who is just some evil mutilated dude.
