S3E1 seems like a parody of the show.

I hope it gets better.

It doesn’t.

Drama/Fantasy/Horror are the genres this site categorizes this show as.

S3 is so different in tone, it’s a Comedy now, with a side of everything else. So much of it is also forced and not funny.

Not a terrible season, but not very good either.

I wouldn't describe this season as comedy. There were some goofy light-hearted scenes, especially in the beginning, but I think they did that to balance out the dark tone and the much less happy ending. Nobody's future is looking as bright as before. If not for the comic relief I think it could've been downright depressing.

Go back and watch S1, there’s next to no comedy and what’s there fits. S2 has a bit more but there’s nothing forced. S3 pours it on so thick. The tone of S1 compared to S3 is so vastly different. Some of the characters even feel like caricatured versions of themselves.

I agree, I liked the comedy and it was necessary.

Unfortunately, if someone is this negative about the show, I don't think you'll be able to change their mind.

I agree with everything you said, though.

You're right. I'm going to do a rewatch eventually but it won't be for a long time, if I try to rewatch it now I'll just go into it feeling negative towards it. Would be same as someone trying to change my mind about it.

I'm hoping I end up liking it because I adore the first two seasons.

reply

For me it didn't.

It was like the whole show had a lobotomy or at least the Duffer Bros did. It went from a sci-fi horror show set in the 80s to a "Remember The 80s" show featuring some sci-fi comedy...

Steve was a completely different character. Hopper was a different character. El goes for a style make over, having no idea what this means, despite going off and having an entire "in the city" episode in the previous season which she came back from with a new style... wtf?!

Really weird direction they took...

It does! It's great!

My problem with the comedy was it played like a pretty standard sitcom setup without giving almost any of them proper resolution in kind. Hopper's like the over-the-top immature dad/boyfriend but doesn't really learn a lesson anywhere (the closest happens before his most egregious behavior even starts). Max's like the aggressive, meddling teen friend with bad advice, but there is no re-evaluation despite characters consistently owning up to far less in the past. Mike gets himself into a pickle like a bumbling husband, but it's for largely sympathetic reasons and gets tons of pushback while being often right and is still the only one apologizing, sometimes for things that the character didn't really do.
