Of course, there's also a reason why movies like E.T. and The Goonies are looked at more fondly than Fletch and The Golden Child. I'm okay with him feeling that way. I'm not okay with him getting a pass for being a dismissive friend and not really having to address anything. Whereas Lucas and Mike apologize almost instantly when Will gets upset, Will seems like he doesn't care about his friends' perspective in all this from beginning to end. Incredibly late to this, but yeah. I think the storyline did a disservice to all involved with none of the bonds coming out looking better. Mike absorbs 100% of the blame in the end (and not even for the right reasons, really), Eleven isn't prompted to reflect on her own actions, and Hopper's toxic aggression gets completely sidestepped while going out mourned as a hero. What's also striking is how Hopper really only seems interested in celebrating driving a wedge between Mike and Eleven. It seems like he couldn't care less what she's up to between that morning and the mall climax, which is pretty damning to the idea that he wanted to just spend time with her. If anything, it speaks more to a personal animosity toward Mike that even official comments from the show seem to trivialize. My problem with the comedy was it played like a pretty standard sitcom setup without giving almost any of them proper resolution in kind. Hopper's like the over-the-top immature dad/boyfriend but doesn't really learn a lesson anywhere (the closest happens before his most egregious behavior even starts). Max's like the aggressive, meddling teen friend with bad advice, but there is no re-evaluation despite characters consistently owning up to far less in the past. Mike gets himself into a pickle like a bumbling husband, but it's for largely sympathetic reasons and gets tons of pushback while being often right and is still the only one apologizing, sometimes for things that the character didn't really do. I was worried they would go this route, but ST3 kind of put a damper on several of the characters' relationships with each other that I probably wound up caring about this less, sorry to say. I think you make a fair point though, and I'd also argue that if concerns over any ongoing dangers in Hawkins are a motivation for going, to leave the others as sitting ducks is a pretty disappointing concession after all they've been through. They're kind of asking for it if the other kids are to become a casualty given all that. Then again, it seems it was mainly Mike who has always rightfully preached team effort, and nobody listened to him this season. I heard they didn't decide until later that this would be the case, but changing plans without properly reflecting it in the previous material is a problem. A couple other storylines didn't feel like they meshed too well with what was established earlier on either. In this case, all I could think of is that it felt like they were going for easy representation when the more complex and challenging angle would have probably been something to do with Will's character. It was kind of what I expected from her, but I did appreciate she actually winds up absorbing some pushback from Dustin and has something resembling an arc. I found a lot of surprising characters rather unlikable in season 3, so she didn't stand out to me by comparison. The letter didn't work for me all around. He didn't wind up actually delivering this message and his behavior after writing it suggested he doesn't show any intentions to express it any time soon. Even if we were to buy him struggling with sudden change, the reality is that all the good times he ever established with El were while she was being holed up from everybody and while Mike, the only person he directs all these issues to, was actually struggling quite a bit. It's not really the same thing as a normal dad seeing his little girl grow up when she was kinda making up for lost time with the person she was separating from and whose relationship was pre-established. 60s and 70s are of course brilliant decades for music. Song for song, I'll take pop music of the 80s over any decade after it. No contest. I love the period soundtrack. View all replies >
