pretty overrated

can't wait for the backlash for season 2

Netflix quality control is pretty good... if it wasn't your cup of tea... then I'm sure the second season won't be much different but I enjoyed it. Then again I watched it early before people were overhyping it so maybe that's why I had no expectations.
It was good... around Super 8 level I'd say.

reply

I make up my own mind once I watch it Don't read reviews before i see a film. rarely look at trailers. Just enough to get the general idea. actually enjoyed season one. looking forward to season two but find that it won't be out until October? Are you kidding me?

reply

Yeah same... I only see trailers when I'm stuck in a theater. October is a long time... but just watch a few other shows and it will be here before you know it.

Somebody for this forum. I've been having ImDb with drawls for months The message boards were a great way to find out answers to your questions and opinions. I just had to remember to read my response if it was angry at least five times before I hit enter. 95% of the time I did not hit enter and just as well

reply

I had one person tell me "It was great, go watch it." and another said "It was good, but not great, go watch it". So I watched one episode and then ended up binging the whole season. I thought it was very entertaining but not some sort of masterpiece as the hype train says.
When people ask me about a show/film I usually just say whether or not it is worth watching. No need to get their expectations way up.

reply

I think people up it so much because of how well it captures the 80s. It's a little bit of time travel to make people in the late 30s early 40s feel like the did as kids.

reply

I think that's a good way to do it. Although I'd be more likely to say something was good on a message board than in person. But yeah, if it's a friend... "Go check it out" is a good way to not oversell it.

reply

I didn't find it as good as the hype suggested it was. But then again, I can't really find genius in a work that is so heavily referential.

But having said that, it was a good show. Just not the second coming of Spielberg/King/Whoever.

reply

Alrighty then

reply

It's good.

The hype will inevitably do it harm though. Nothing is ever that good.

reply

highly overrated childrens show... like a discount 80s family alien movie...

I liked the first episode or two... however, people were talking about it as if it was some kind of masterpiece... It's not...

It quickly devolves into a kid's adventure movie, becoming increasingly less eerie or creepy as more and more is explained... I suppose it's partly the TV format which leads to the constant need to explain and convey information...

It's still miles ahead of most TV, but it doesn't measure up to most decent horror movies...

reply

"it doesn't measure up to most decent horror movies..."

Like what? The only horror film I can think of that is better than this(or a good horror film at all) is Alien(1979).
Please give me a list of these horror movies that are better than Stranger Things. I had no idea I was missing out on all the best horror films ever made.

reply

Literally any half decent horror movie... stanger things is a kids series, a watered down E.T... You dont need to be Alien to beat it...

But i'll play along... Sinister, The Purge, Get Out, Incidious, Th Conjuring (1 & 2), When A Stranger Calls (yes, even the remake), The Invitation, Cabin In The Woods (did the referencing thing better and played with the concept in an interesting way), The Witch, Split, The Babadook, etc... the list goes on... far too many to mention...

All of these movies are more scary, disturbing or creepy than Stanger Things... many of them play with genre tropes in interesting ways... most of them are shot better than Stranger Things... they all have more mood and atmosphere than that TV show... and for nearly all of them, one can buy into the risk and consequences of the characters actions... they make you feel it...

I'm not saying Stranger Things is bad, it just can't hold a candle to even an average horror movie... Even a flawed movie like The 9th Life of Louis Drax , which has a central child character and deals with the similar family relationships as in this show, does it so much better... it's actually creepy and haunting and takes it in a truly horrifying direction (worth watching), whereas Stranger Things is a mock 80s kids series, there is no real consequence, you feel no real danger, because its too cute... It's the all action family sequel like Aliens, instead of the original horror movie like Alien...

reply

Ah the same reason you hate aliens. Did you grow up an orphan or something, whenever there's s family theme you start having a little bitch fit. Must suck being you.

reply

Its not my fault that it is the default template hollywood uses whenever it wants to water down a concept to hype to the masses... infantalising ths culture...

Also, unlike aliens, i liked stranger things... i just think it was overhyped and falls short of whats common in theatre...

Do you not see how this show lacks the horror and mood of the movies i mentioned?

reply

"Sinister, The Purge, Get Out, Incidious, Th Conjuring (1 & 2), When A Stranger Calls (yes, even the remake), The Invitation, Cabin In The Woods (did the referencing thing better and played with the concept in an interesting way), The Witch, Split, The Babadook, etc... the list goes on... far too many to mention..."

Ah, I see. You have terrible taste in films. I get it now. Thanks.

reply

I did not care for this show. I made it through to the end, but was underwhelmed. I am more a Twin Peaks guy. I wonder if any Twin Peaks fans like this show or hate it.

reply

Yeah... twin peaks towers above it... it's really an instructive contrast between ths two...

Did you find Stranger Things to be too cute and talky for its own good? I found it a bit too sentimental in an unearned way...

reply

I thought the kids were kind of annoying and the situations weren't very compelling. I just couldn't get into it. It just seemed to be a lot of material that has been done before.

reply

And, yet, you like stranger things...

reply

I like it more than 99.99%+ of horror films...

reply

I personally like it. I think it's appealing cause it takes place in the 80s and has your typical nerdy Gang going on daily adventures. My guess is that it allows fans to re-live their own childhoods during the 80s (or 90s in my case lol).
