Not incredibly thrilled by the trailor

Sure it doesn't look nearly as bad as the trailer for Ghostbusters (2016) looked at the time, but I am not crazy about the young teenage kids being the leads. I mean name one movie with teenage kids in which they are likable characters? Most of the time they are annoying. The charm of the originals was in having these charming semi-competent goof ball characters trying to catch ghosts. I like Paul Rudd just fine but this looks like it is trying to bank off the success of Stranger Things a little too much and will end up resembling the feel of the original 2 very little.

Also as side note wasn't one of the gags of the original how heavy all the equipment is? Are we to believe now these 12 to 16 year old will be able to luge around that heavy equipment?

I don't know maybe I am just burned out of remakes, reboots, sequels, triquels, re-hashes, seq-hashes, of all these old franchises that mostly exist in a time capsule. Why not just leave the old stuff alone and come out with newly adapted material from undeveloped books or come up with original content?

Ghostbusters was one of my favorite movies. I can't stand Stranger things and Ghostbusters 2020 is pandering to the same audience. I'll avoid this movie.

reply

To be fair, at least the first trailer seems to have avoided spoiling any of the good moments. So after enough negative feedback the studios (at least one of them) are capable of modifying their behavior. Who knew? All three surviving original Ghostbusters plus Sigourney Weaver are in this movie yet they didn't show a single brief clip of them. Obviously an intentional choice. No question they're trying to tap into the same audience as Stranger Things, even casting Finn Wolfhard, but I suspect this is also aimed at those of us who watched the original films as kids.

Trying to do quality content that appeals to all ages, and doesn't bore either end of the age spectrum - that's a tough tightrope to walk. Many more attempts misfire than succeed. In real life giving a group of middle to high school age teens functional particle beam weapons to play with would probably result in at least one of them getting accidentally fried. Even if they were uncharacteristically disciplined it's hard to believe they could learn to use all that equipment effectively without help. I expect they'll get overconfident and find themselves in a jam, and that's when grandpa Egon's old buddies will show up to pull their asses out of the fire. And I really, really hope that moment doesn't end up in one of the longer trailers between now and next summer. You want to see it for the first time watching the movie.

Ghostbusters, even Ghostbuster 2, were fun movies.
This looks depressing AF.

And I am a big fan of Stranger Things, I just don't want it in my Ghostbuster movie.

reply

They have definitely retooled Ghostbusters and steered into the Goosebumps arena geared toward kids. And honestly, that's probably exactly where Ghostbusters belongs. From a business franchise standpoint of milking a property for all its worth, this is the way to go.

reply

lol true. Something we should all keep in mind when they are doing these reboots and 30 year later sequels they are not making it for the fans of the original. They are making it because franchise films are where the big money is at, so they take an established IP and then try to appeal that IP to the lowest common denominator. At least in this they are just trying to shift it to appeal to kids which actually has a marketable value. GB 2016 seems like it was trying to go out of its way to alienate possibly half of the market, which was particularly stupid since previously the IP was more popular with that half of the market.

Just goes to show, radically changing an established IP and the target market is not a good idea. taking an established IP and targeting it to a younger audience actually might work a lot better. But we will see I guess.

I think there's a space for an adult aimed raunchy supernatural comedy franchise. I don't think it should be Ghostbusters, which was always reasonably family orientated. I'd rather they invent something new where we can actually have jokes about guys banging ghosts.

reply

Honestly, I thought the trailer was good. Im not going to the movie (Ghostbusters 2 was the end for me). I just hope my nieces and nephews enjoy it and have fun like i did with the originals.

reply

This reminds me of Good Boys (2019) right off the bat. I didn't want to see little kids saying and doing nasty stuff. This is like a kids fantasy movie where you discover your heritage and become the hero. This movie will appeal to kids. Next thing you know, movies will star 5 year olds in teenage situations.

reply

good point, it feels similar to how the new Star Wars trilogy feels like the writers Ghostbusters fantasy and not an organic story. The kids are the author insert how probably loved Ghostbusters as a teenager and now is trying to create that fantasy with a budget of probably $100 million dollars. Well I am not interested in paying 15 to 20 dollars to see some high production of someone else's fantasy.

WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY JASON REITMAN,SON OF IVAN.WITH IVAN'S BLESSING AND ALL SURVIVING CAST OPTING IN,INCLUDING THE ELUSIVE MISTER MURRAY.

reply

You know caps lock suggests yelling correct? You should turn that off.

All the surviving cast took part in the abomination that was Ghostbusters 2016. And just because someone is someone's son doesn't mean they are the same or even similar to the parent.

I will remain skeptical until I hear many good reviews.

YOU SHOULD LEARN TO NOT TELL OTHER ADULTS WHAT TO DO...SPOILED BABY.....NOW,THE CAST PLAYED GOOFY CAMEO THROW AWAY ROLES IN THE 2016 VERSION..THEY HAVE ALL SIGNED ON TO PLAY THEIR ORIGINAL CHARACTERS IN NON CAMEO ROLES THIS TIME INCLUDING MURRAY WHO SPENT 30 YEARS SAYING NO,ABSOLUTELY NOT,UNLESS THE SCRIPT IS PERFECT...AS FAR AS JASON REITMAN WRITING DIRECTING WITH HIS FATHER,IVAN REITMAN'S BLESSING...ITS COOL AND ADDS TO THINGS BUT JASON HIMSELF IS THE SELLING POINT.HE IS A QUALITY DIRECTOR HIMSELF WHO GAVE US...UP IN THE AIR,JUNO,THANK YOU FOR SMOKING,YOUNG ADULT,LABOR DAY,ETC...ALL VERY GOOD MOVIES.

reply

"YOU SHOULD LEARN TO NOT TELL OTHER ADULTS WHAT TO DO...SPOILED BABY....."

Are you being funny? If you want to have the respect as an adult stop acting like a child and maintain proper courtesy. All caps in text signifies emphasis and is not meant to be used all the time. It is a spoiled mentality that leads one to think they can do as they please and not be concerned with maintaining common courtesy.

Now with the cast; since from the trailers they did not make a single appearance and the fact that the story is seemingly taking place NOT in New York City and will be separating itself form the original in terms of themes (going for a more Stranger Things feel) the original cast WILL be glorified cameos at best and not central to the plot, in fact based on the trailer their inclusion is seemingly going to be a 'shoehorned' in feel. I could be wrong of course but that is the feeling i got from it.

I did like Thank you for Smoking quite a bit; haven't seen the others on that list but I'll say I like that one. doesn't mean that I am less concerned with Ghostbusters though.

reply

THEYRE SAVING THE BEST SHIT,INCLUDING ORIGINAL CAST FOR THE FILM...TRAILERS SHOULDNT GIVE THE WHOLE MOVIE AWAY..

OH...I AM NOT BEING FUNNY...I TYPE WITH CAPS(FOR 20 YRS)...ALL YOUR NONSENSE ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS IS INVENTED RHETORIC...BASING AN OPINION ON MY INTELLECT OR PERSONALITY BASED ON YOUR IMAGINARY HANGUPS ON CAPS IS MORONIC.

reply

Maybe; but the setting seems like the original cast inclusion is going to feel forced; unless they have a good reason and play it out right.

Than you have been an inconsiderate person for 20 years. Also how have you maintained a job in the last 20 years? Try writing memos or emails in all caps and see how long you last. It is not imaginary hangups, it is the commonly accepted use of caps in typed text. How many official memos, government documents, official letters, books, articles, magazines etc do you see where the text is all caps? How many other users have you interacted with that use all caps? You know why it is so few, because it is commonly accepted that using all caps for no reason is rude.

If you do not disable your caps, I will be setting you to my ignore list; I encourage everyone else that wants to maintain courtesy do the same. IF you don't want to courteous to other users you should be ostracized and not get to participate.

reply

LMAO...NOTHING LIKE BEING CHAINED TO YOUR OWN EGO,HUH?...DO AS I SAY OR ELSE...YOU WOULD HAVE MADE A GREAT NAZI.

reply

wanting to maintain courtesy and ostracizing people voluntarily is not the same as encouraging government force. i am not forcing anyone and if people want to interact with someone that is being intentionally unpleasant that is on them. Learn the difference. I for one am done. You are inconsiderate and I no longer wish to see your all caps nonsense. you are on my ignore list.

Anyone that sees this I encourage you to do the same; since Kowalski (ironic you display name is not all caps) wants to be child like and type in all caps just to go against the common and appropriate use of text, he should have to learn that if you want to play with other kids you have to follow the accepted rules and standards; and not be purposefully an obnoxious ass just for the sake of it. Goodbye.

reply

LMAO...WEINER.

reply

A large reason for it starring kids and taking place in a small town was due to it being in development hell for so long.

It's been thirty years between Ghostbusters 2 and Afterlife, so a new movie now can't be a straight sequel or stick to the usually formula, if there were 15 years between Ghostbusters 2 and Ghostbusters 3 you would have to say something about it, it's going to be obvious Ghostbusters 3 isn't a direct continuation of GB2 you need to say something about why all the main characters now grayer and older, but since it's Ben thirty it's harder to adapt.

reply

I get what you are saying and agree they have to shack it up. But I am not crazy about it trying to capture on the 'feel' of another piece of entertainment that is just popular right now (stranger things). Ghostbusters is a little more timeless than that, IMO. I think it might just be a personal feeling on it, but I kind of which they would just leave it alone and let it exist as just the 2 movies.

reply

Same - but I'll chance it.

reply

I'll wait for reviews; if 'drinker recommends' I might go see it.

reply

The trailer looks like it should be a commercial for some stupid product. It's got the bearded hipster dad talking to the kids in it like they're about to go to Disney world or look up their heritage with ancestry.com or something. What's with this ridiculous beard fad?

reply

LMAO...BEARD FAD.

reply

Yeah it did not look like a good trailer. Not quite as bad as the 2016 Ghostbuster's trailer but pretty close.
