Thor is up Thor is down

What’s up with Thor’s power levels recently? He ended Ragnarok on a high but in IW gets his ass handed to him in the opening scene.
Then he takes the full blast of a star and almost kills Thanos
Is he now the strongest in the movie universe or will he be powered down again by the next movie.

They've kept his power level utterly consistent throughout the films. Unarmed, and facing Thanos, armed with the Power Stone, and his Black Order, he was outmatched. Sure, his physical body is strong, as evidenced by his ability to withstand a direct, sustained, blast from the Power Stone directly to his head, as well as the heat from the star, but being difficult to kill doesn't mean he can easily kill Thanos.

He returned, wielding perhaps the mightiest weapon ever forged, and was able to wound Thanos, but unable to kill him.

What about any of that seems inconsistent to you?

reply

I have to disagree here man.

First of all, he was not alone against Thanos and the Black Order. Now we dont see the fight but I can assume that Thor at least had Loki and the Valkerie team backing him up as they were all together after Ragnarok. Also they pretty much kept their own against Hella who I think is way stronger than Thanos but they did enough to hold her back and get away. I would think they can at least achieve this against Thanos.
Thanos is not a god and at the end of Ragnarok Thor had come into his powers so why is he so de-powered against Thanos. Whhich is why I say he was inconsistent here.
I dont think I would include the power stones as any sort of upgrade at that stage as the power stones are also used very inconsistently in this movie.
So that's part of my theory anyway.

We’re not sure of the nature of Thor’s defeat. According to the Russos, Valkyrie and several Asgardians escaped so we know Val wasn’t there to help out. Hulk’s appearance seemed to be a surprise so one can assume Banner was hanging back for a sneak attack. Meanwhile, Thanos has a stone capable of blowing up planets. If Thor got hit with that thing, it could explain why he was down for the count.

Interesting points to both arguments.

Here's what I know: Hella is an Asgardian, the same as Thor and Loki, although a much more powerful Asgardian than either. Only Odin was able to keep her locked away with his vast power. From the comic books, Odin could defeat Thanos.

Concerning Thor's power level, I think the hammer is key. Thor learned in Ragnarok that he didn't need the hammer to harness his power. The hammer is more of a channel for his power and an item he relies on, much the same way Captain America doesn't have to have a shield but is a better fighter with his shield. Thor is a better fighter with a hammer.

On Thanos in comparison to Hella or Thor, Thanos is an Eternal. His race is super-strong, super-smart and very powerful. They were created by the Celestials. Could Thanos beat Hella? Yes indeed but he could also be defeated by her. If you take the near end of A:IW when Thor buries the ax in Thanos's chest, technicaly he's beaten Thanos. He wins the fight even though he losses the battle.

Hope these shared thoughts add more substance.

He has grown in power somewhat consistently IMO.

He was clearly underpowered in the first Avengers, and now I feel like they are trying to make up for that by readjusting his power levels.

It's just that in IW's opening he didn't stand a chance without a weapon. Despite that, he stil showcased some incredible withstanding abilities to direct attacks.

However it may be, he is strong as hell as of now.

Thor was stronger than Hulk in Ragnarok, but only mildly. Thanos made quick work of Hulk so it makes sense Thanos could do something similar to Thor. The blast that Thor took from Nidavellir seems more in line with a solar flare than the energy you'd get from something like a supernova. Thanos and Nidavellir appeared to leave Thor in a similar condition. If the movie is suggesting that Thanos' strength, while armed with the power stone, is comparable to one of Nidavellir's flares, I'd say that's in the realm of plausibility. Then Thor gets an axe that is powerful enough to summon the Bifrost, wedges it into Thanos' chest, forcing Thanos to space-stone outta there and limp to his sunset. I'd say that is also plausible.

Then again, everyone seems to be surviving the stabbings in these movies lol

I count at least 3 fatal stabbings that these guys just patched over in IW alone.

Do you think Thanos could have survived the blast that Hella took from Lightning Thor?

reply

Vision, Iron Man, and Thanos are the only beings I recall that survived stabbings. Vision is non-organic, so it makes some sense that he can survive a stabbing. As for Tony, he used his nanotech to heal himself. Meanwhile, Thanos got an axe to the chest and it was pretty clear he survived due to the Infinity Gauntlet.

reply

I'm not an expert, but I'd say that if Thanos has the gauntlet, he could survive just about anything the universe throws at him.

reply

Black Order guy also got a stabbing to the gut.

Tony I don’t know how he survived nano or not.
