He went all Millenium Falcon

Riding that nuclear blast all the way to Earth huh - ya that's plausible - NOT.

reply

Why not?

reply

1. the only reason a nuclear detonation on Earth has a outward blast is because there is an atmosphere for it to interact with. There is none in space.
2. IF there was a blast to ride then the ship would have been torn apart. it doesn't have a rear blast shield to protect it from the forces driving it towards Earth.

reply

Google "Project Daedalus"

The hard part would be what direction to ride the blast because it really doesn't matter what speed it is going.

The movie was silly, but in the frame of being silly it is reasonable. Most movies are much stupider.

reply

Exactly. Nuclear explosions produce shockwaves even in low density environments like space.

But that's in regards to the technology of our time. The technology in their time which is well into the future is much more advanced than what we know now. And we're not privy to the exact details of their technology. So I just chalk it up to all that.

reply

The ending of the film strained credulity too much. But I think that the idea was that the nuclear explosion provided the primary propulsion for the return home. McBride was a master pilot, and used his spacecraft's steering thrusters to get the ship on the right course.

reply

Everything in the ending never happened, it all was just a flash of imagination he got a moment before he was burned to death by the rocket thrusters when he sneaked under the launching spaceship.

reply

Any movie is whatever you want to make of it.

reply

Everything doesn't make any sense after that point. Even the scene of sneaking into the spaceship from under the thrusters itself. That's just too ridiculous to take seriously.

He's dead right there. Burnt to ash.
