This is the best Godzilla film

It's not even up for debate. I highly recommend you experience this in a theater! It seriously made me want to go home and rip my copies of Legendary's Godzilla movies into pieces.

reply

Without any spoilers or specifics, can you just say if the big G is solo in this movie a la Shin Godzilla or does it fight other Kaiju? Yes or no is good.

Gonna watch this in IMAX - have seen and heard nothing but praise for it everywhere.

reply

Godzilla fights no other Kaiju. It's a solo Godzilla movie.

And it's perfect. I left the theater in tears.

reply

I'll read what you wrote in the spoiler tags after I've watched the movie, thanks.

reply

All he did was answer your question as to whether Godzilla fights other kaiju.

reply

Haha I got paranoid when I saw the spoiler tag.

You gonna watch this? I still like the 2014 Godzilla movie more than the 2 sequels and thought Shin Godzilla was good too. Keen to watch this since it seems to be uniformly getting praise everywhere.

reply

I saw it on Friday. It's great!

But you should go into it knowing that the human drama takes center stage. Much of the story is a reflection of, and social commentary on, Japan immediately after WWII, as well as the Japanese government's recklessness in regard to the lives of their own citizens. You'll have to watch it to see what I mean.

It's one of the most interesting films I've seen, especially recently.

reply

Good to hear, thanks.

Sounds a lot like Shin Godzilla. I never expect a Godzilla or Kaiju film that runs 90 minutes to have an hour or more of pure monster action and fighting, coz that would be stupid and overkill. As long as there are enough scenes featuring the Big G and the movie is good, I'm fine with it.

reply

You still get a good amount of Godzilla wreaking havoc, so don't worry about that.

reply

Is this in Subtitles??

reply

Yeah, as far as I know, there is no dub of this. At least not playing in theaters anyway.

reply

Thanks for the words. Now I want to see it.

reply

Very much in agreement. This is a movie meant for the big Imax screen.

If anyone's interested, I reviewed the movie on my youtube channel. Appreciate any feedback. Trying to improve -https://youtu.be/XxOgmeRRWKc

Is this one better than Godzilla vs Megalon? Because in that one, Megalon was a beast, coming up from underneath the Earth, along with the Seatopians who were very strong. And of course Gigan coming from outer space was a complete terror. Does this movie come close to that?

reply

Loved it but Legendary’s King of the Monsters is still the best Godzilla film. It’s about Godzilla.

Minus One is about people and guest stars Godzilla.

reply

That's a surprising take. I thought King of the Monsters was a significant step down from the 2014 film.

reply

Nope. 2014, also a good movie, had less Godzilla than Minus 1.

KotM is made FOR Godzilla fans. Nothing will ever surpass it.

And I’ve been a huge Godzilla fan since I was a kid in the early 70s.

reply

Yes, Edwards took the Jaws approach in the 2014 film. But I didn't mind that and thought it was a better movie than the sequel.

Being that you are a long-time Godzilla fan, I'm curious, what did you think of the '98 film with Matthew Broderick?

reply

I thought Edwards did a terrific job with the Godzilla scenes he did have.

As for Godzilla ‘98, I liked it but don’t consider it a Godzilla movie. It’s more of a remake of Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.

Interesting.

I tried rewatching it a few years ago in an effort to re-assess the film. I can't quite put my finger on exactly why I don't think it works, but I realized about halfway through that I was losing interest in the film and it just wasn't holding my attention. I never even finished it.

reply

I really am beginning to hope that this is good. I mean, there are people who would tell you that Godzilla (2014) is great and there are people who really like Shin Godzilla, so I have to see it myself... But there's a lot of good being said about this one.

reply

I enjoyed the 2014 Godzilla film and think that it's overall a good movie, but I definitely think that Minus One is superior. But they are very different films.

It may be helpful to know what you're getting into before you go in though. As the poster above you says, this film places a lot of emphasis on the human characters and human drama, and less on Godzilla destroying stuff. (Though there is still a lot of Godzilla destroying stuff.)

After watching the trailer for GODZILLA X KONG 2 and just how cheesy it looks, I couldn't be more convinced to see MINUS ONE on the big screen next weekend

reply

Godzilla x Kong 2 is clearly pure escapism. Cotton candy, if you will. Minus One is a serious drama.
