What are your thoughts on Zendaya?

She played a cool character! I like her much better than Liz which is she a bit forgettable, but I'm a little bit disappointed that she had no a big parts in it. I really liked her.

She was cute. The "My friends call me MJ" line was awful though.

It does seem like they're setting her up as a future love interest, but I'm personally hoping they bring Liz back.

reply

Why that line was awful? It gave me hope that she will do more scenes or even they will have love interest in the sequels.

reply

I have no problem with her character continuing to be a part of the series, the line itself was just clunky and really made very little sense. It felt tacked on as a wink to the audience, but any audience member who recognizes the moniker "MJ" also would know that "MJ" stands for Mary Jane, not Michelle J___.

Zendaya was the worst part of the film, in my opinion. Her character was not only arrogant, but it was also clearly based off of her own real life activist identity, especially with her politically correct lines related to the Washington Monument and "slavery." Give me a break.

LOVED her. While some of the criticism (the specific whiners turned off by her race and "political" comments sound like a broken record) regarding her portrayal is fair, to me Zendaya brought as much humor as anyone else in the movie. Sure, her character's deadpan personality may be seen as irritating and overplayed, but she had an endearing quality and freshness that made her a joy to watch. She's basically like a funnier version of Allison from The Breakfast Club.

Oh, and a completely different MJ? Reportedly she was given those initials merely as a nod to the "real" Mary Jane, so her character is not supposed to be Mary Jane Watson. IF that didn't turn out to be the case in the sequel, then I'm perfectly fine with it. But as an original character, she's awesome.

reply

if they didn't need to shoehorn iron man in she would have had a bigger part

Zendaya seems to be playing a different character than the comic, now a frumpy political awkward teen? they are playing against a fine line of making her likeable and loathed, they need to find a balance, she appears to have a crush on peter

reply

Utterly disgusting that they would try to make her this franchise's MJ. MJ is a WHITE REDHEAD. That is absolutely iconic to her character. Amy Pascal is a politically correct hack who should be drummed out of the movie industry and be working at a bakery somewhere.

reply

I couldn't stand her. Worst part of the movie with her self righteous political bullshit and Janeane Garofolo dry humor act, but overall for the 9 billionth reboot of Spider-man the movie wasn't too bad. I think I'm finally getting overly saturated with the superhero genre. It's finally getting old, at least in my opinion.

reply

Yeah that crap about slaves building the monument was just stupid and out of place. If she was at the pyramids of giza would she not appreciate that because they were built by Hebrew slaves, how about the Coleseum which was built by mostly slaves from Gaul? Just a stupid PC crap line.

I also agree that superhero genre is getting stale.

On a side note the whole self righteousness of sticking our nose up at American slavery is a rather large ignoring of the fact that slavery and servitude to monarchs was a normal part of human civilization until relatively recently. Individual freedom is a very new concept, like less than 300 years old and it took about an addition 230 years to perfect. To look back and put a mindless, 'because American slavery was more recent' spin on it is rather insulting considering the groups that practiced slavery for the longest period in human history was the Egyptians and the Persians. Your talking each one practiced slavery for around a 1000 years. Also it ignores that in certain Asian and African countries there is still forms of slavery that still go on even today.
