I love this show, its among the best written cable shows today. However, this season with the absence of Abbey and all these flashbacks seems like its the last season of RD?. I could be wrong and I hope I am but its really feels empty and not a lot of sub plots going on this season. I think this season is more about how Abbey died and how Ray is dealing with it that could also mean leaving LA; which is what Abbey wanted all along.
shareI dont think so...from what I remember they just changed the showrunner (it shows its getting back to the quality of earlier seasons not these two last crap ones) and he has big plans. So unless they get very poor ratings its unlikey its the last one.

The Season 5 does feel very different and you are right kind of empty, more flashbacks of Abbey than sub plots. At the same time it does feel it is coming to a end and I really hope I am wrong too, but I checked IMBD and there is nothing listed about 2018 season 6 either?. Then again, they said the same thing about the "Sopranos" in season 5 and it went on two more seasons. This show's has a certain style in both writing and production and reminds me a lot of Micheal Mann's work.
shareI think it's a new beginning. Ray going back to being in business and having clients. It went off the deep end a bit with the whole Russian mob story. Hopefully it's getting back to what makes it entertaining.

shareVariety reports that the show's already renewed for Season 6. The location is moving to New York, where Ray will try to build his relationship with Brige. They are jettisoning the baggage of Mickey (Voight is a great actor, but I've always despised this shithbag, toxic character) and Ray's lame-ass son and brothers. The Big Apple locale opens the scope of Ray's business opportunities. I am very glad that they are keeping Brige in the narrative. I hope that Katherine Monnieg stays in the cast, as well. I think this is a great move, following the best season of Ray Donovan in quite some time.
I thought episode 5/12 was intelligent and emotional, exceptionally well-done, and the haunting Bowie song, Rock 'n' Roll Suicide, at the end was inspired.

shareWow, never thought anyone would hate Voights character. IMO its one of the best Voights roles in his whole film work and I enjoy seeing him. He plays it so well and its a complex role.
Also his son, awkward dumba5s son, might be annoying but I think its realistic response to what his distant closed off father is like and I hope they dont drop his story too much.
Cannot wait for the next season,hopefully more eps. This new showrunner has nailed it, the show is back to its former glory.
To make it clear: Voight is great in the role. Jack Gleeson was great as Joffrey on GoT; but their characters are repulsive. Mickey is toxicity personified. Ray NEVER wanted him back in his life. Recall, in Season 1, Ray's reaction when Abby told him she had reached out to Mickey. By this season, Mickey's damage to the family was so great that Ray wanted him in jail. I'm watching the show because of Ray. It shouldn't be surprising that I share his feelings. You are free to disagree; but we can both agree that the show is back on track, and we probably both think that's the most importance thing.
shareBut you cannot have just likeable or semi-likeable characters. You need Mickey to define Ray, to explain Ray and add complexity to the show. GoT would be missing a significant part without Joffrey. Making us take this rollercoaster of emotions is what great shows do. You cannot expect them to avoid making such characters. They give it structure, balance it out.

Sounds like a reboot. I'll judge by what we get. I'm less enthusiastic about season 5 than you are. I wouldn't go so far as calling it a complete mess, but it was coherently 'challenged'.
