Father character

Did anyone else find the father be devoid of any redeeming qualities? He pushed his kids into wrestling because he wanted to live vicariously through only their accomplishments since he was not able to achieve stardom. He openly discussed which of his children he liked better based on their wrestling abilities and popularity. When things got tough he refused to take responsibility and berated them for not being tougher.

reply

Within the context of the film I completely agree with you.

reply

No, because thats the way all fathers are

reply

No they are not. Most people do not treat their children that way.

reply

Well thats only because not every father owns a wrestling promotion

reply

I feel sorry for you that you think all fathers are the same.

reply

Your welcome

reply

No, because that is how you train a success person.

reply

Going to have to disagree with you on that and the movie clearly is not endorsing the father and shows how the family was destroyed largely because of it.

reply

You should google Max Verstappen, a very successful F1 driver, that is how his father treat him.

reply

Michael Jackson's father was much much worst. But he got his family out of poverty, a horrible father though.

reply

I think he was very tough and hard on the kids but I think it's obvious he loved both his kids and his wife. He lived through the depression and that hardens a lot of people many today will never understand, especially rich westerners with cushy lifestyles. Even the mom was hard, when Kevin tried talking to her or asking her help, she dismissed him and didn't want to talk about it.

reply

From what I hear - this movie actually made him look better than his real life self. I've heard he was worse.

The movie was careful not to make the wrestling profession look self-destructive or evil: they didn't want people to think the wrestling lifestyle caused the Von Erich tragedies. They wanted the father to be the villain, basically; so they put the blame on him

reply

Well if the movie portrayed him better than his actual self, then I feel sorry for the sons that had to live under him.
