List of references obvious or obscure

What did you notice in the background or fore? Lets start the very big list.
A few I liked:

Kineda's bike from Akira
The Back to the Future music
The Valley Forge from Silent Running (mediocre film but back then any sci-fi was welcome)
Harley Quinn in the club
Tomb of Horrors demon face portal picture on back of Aech's van
Battle Toads
Halo soldiers
a Madball (pretty obvious)
Christine and the old Batmobile
planet Gygax
Simon game pin
Marvin the Martian
Goro

Tons of other stuff too? What stood out as your favorites? I heard that Chun Li was in there but I didn't see her. Lots of things referenced in the book that didn't make the movie sadly.

reply

I saw Chun Li in the trailer, obviously the Iron Giant is in every ad, the DeLorean takes center stage in the story. I did catch Chucky cuttin' it up in the trailers, and the Gundam mech.

Hadn't noticed Marvin the Martian, I need to look closer because he is a favorite of mine. I'm not sure if I saw the Battletoads but they are a great addition too.

reply

The Battletoads are in the vanguard of the final assault, along with the Ninja Turtles, blink and you miss them.

I liked that Serenity got to make an appearance. Samus Aran in the club was pretty cool. Man, the list could go on forever.

reply

Marvin was near the beginning when Wade was describing the different "worlds" players could visit, a small avatar advancing from right to left on the screen.

reply

Yeah finally saw it yesterday, and definitely kept an eye out for Marvin, was happy to see him. I noticed just to the right of him, the Battletoads were also entering, but still bathed in a pretty bright light.

Though I had seen her in the trailer, I missed seeing Chun-Li in the actual movie. Then again, I wasn't trying too hard to catch references.

Batman climbing Everest
Beetlejuice

reply

The name is Kaneda's bike =P , that and the Gundam one were some of my favorites.

reply

there was He-man

the Terminator T2 thumbs up reference

reply

Yes, done by the Iron Giant as it's melting in the lava. Considering that the Iron Giant in his own movie can withstand a nuclear explosion, lava should be no difficulty for it to come back from.

reply

How about the bleedin' obvious one: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Five tickets becomes three keys, well hidden.

reply

Well, is it "bleedin' obvious" or is it "well hidden?"
I didn't notice that one.

reply

It says right on the cover of the novel "A mix between Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Matrix".

reply

I never even knew about the novel.

John Cusack character with a stereo over his head from 'Say Anything'.

reply

Also 'Alien' with the fake creature coming out of Artemis chest.
