Great film, but one thing I didn't understand... [Spoilers]

...what's with the 'atomics' being on Arrakis? House Atriades wasn't there for long, and before that the Harkonnen were there for hundreds of years. So at what point exactly did the stash of atomic missiles, his "grandfather's legacy" I think Gurney called it, get to a secret bunker there? Were they there the whole time the Harkonnen ruled the planet? That seems really unlikely. It also doesn't seem likely they managed to transport them there in the very short time they ruled. Why would they move them there anyway, and not keep them on their home planet?
Maybe someone familiar with the books can explain this?

I would assume having house atomics close to hand is, tactically-speaking, a good move. You can keep an eye on them and utilize them more readily.

So, I would also hazard a guess that the atomics were brought over and stored when Atriedes moved in. The location might have been scouted out by Duncan Idaho.

I don't remember if the books mention the logistics or really much of the atomic weapon cache at all.

That makes some sense, but the way they were spoken about made it seem like they were some ancient legacy, and that they were the only atomics they had. Why would they move ALL of them there if that was the case? It just doesn't quite seem right.

reply

A lot about this second installment doesn't quite seem right.

6/10 on this one, gave the first one 8/10

The atomics were probably moved there sometime after Duncan went to do the initial recon of the planet and found the best possible hiding spot for them. They would've been moved there before the Duke's family and entourage migrated over, tho.

House Atraides knew they were entering a hostile world where they would face danger from both the Harkonnens and possibly the Fremen, so it makes sense to have that stockpiled arsenal handy, in case a situation arose that warranted their use.

One thing I didn't understand is where did you see a great film.

I think the real question is "how did Harkonnens not know?" They infiltrated House Atriades quite completely.

And even they did not know where they were, why they did not look for it? They should at least know there were nukes.

How did House Atriades create a cave in the fremen territory and transport that amount of nukes with neither the fremen nor Harkonnens knowing?

And there weren't even any guard, how does that make sense?

I don't think that was in the books, I never read the book, but I watched other adoptions, and this is the first time I am hearing about the nukes.
