Why I prefer the new Pennywise.

I loved the mini series as a kid....But watching it as an adult (31) sadly, it does not hold up at all, besides being nostalgic.
What I love about the new pennywise is how this one actually does seem like some kind of otherworldly monster and not just a man in a clown suit.
Tim Curry gave a great performance in the mini series.....But it was hard to believe that IT was actually some kind of alien because it just looked and acted like a psycho in a clown's suit.
I've seen a lot of people say the opposite and say the reason they prefer the old Pennywise is basically the same reason I prefer the new one lol.
Tim Curry was just too human like.
Scarsgard genuinely seemed like an alien entity that feeds on children.
The way it moved was very creepy too.....And again, old Pennywise was just a man in a suit lol.

I still love Tim Curry's portrayal, although you have to remember they were working to a limited budget for a family audience and no CGI and very little practical effects back then. I also think they simplified his actions, to make Pennywise seem human even though he isn't.

However, Skarsgard can go full alien-who-hasn't-quite-got-the-hang-of-human-behaviour, and his ability to independently move his eyes and his contortionist abilities really ups the creep factor, not to mention the extensive CGI available today.

I just like both interpretations, considering the limitations that both were made under.

I like both Pennywise versions but wish 2017 gave us more of the taunting/stalking of the kids.. The scene in the mini-series with IT popping up from the drain to scare Eddie was legit 100 times more traumatizing than those Neilbolt scenes.

Either way, I really loved the intro to this flick - Skarsgård nailed it!

I agree bobbydallas. The first scene with Pennywise made the rest of the film hard to live up to. The reason I loved the miniseries was pennywise just appearing off in the distance, casually fucking with your mind. This movie lacked that kind of subtlety (an exception might be the kids show that was on TV... first at Bev's house we hear the audio of the show and the kids are talking about playing in the sewers and floating; then again with the Tommyknockers-esque scene when the kids and pennywise are telling Henry to kill them all.) I keep saying i wanted to see pennywise manifest himself in the arcade game Richie was playing or even have Ben listening to NKOTB on his headphones when they suddenly yhe lyrics of one of their songs starts singing something like, "you're gonna die fatboy! And you'll float too! Oh oh oh oh-oh! The fright stuff!"

Like come on movie... UTILIZE all the 80s shit you shoehorned into this story to scare the fuck out of us with rather than just as bait for Stanger Things fanboys and nostalgia-hungry millenials.

The main thing wrong with this movie is that it wasn't scary at all. Annabelle was scarier.

The Shinning

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween 2
The Ring
Quarantine
Rec
The Howling
Salems Lot

Killer Clowns from Outer space
Alien
Hellraiser

As for the new IT, I think the novel is scarier than this movie and the TV miniseries.

Each to their own. I didn't find IT scary either but I've not found any horror film scary since I were a kid..
I just thought it was a great film overall.

Skargard's version not human enough, "friendly" enough, too silly looking, etc... No surprise, many were bound to have their issues with a new and different take on Pennywise no matter what. Truthfully I can't say i necessarily expected to be frightened by Bill's Pennywise - horror movies, old or new, rarely scare me anymore - but based on the trailers and promos did I expect the actor to deliver a super creepy, strong and basically perfect performance? Absolutely. And unsurprisingly, I felt Bill's take on the character was second to none.

The only thing I would have asked from his version, is to see him taunting the kids some more before the big confrontation. Get some more dialogue in. That aside, in my eyes this Pennywise was the embodiment of a evil clown/supernatural being. His appearance/s, delivery, and insane body movements were staggering and as nightmarish as it gets. So overall, I do appreciate Curry and Skargard's performances equally, but as the OP suggested, the latter is arguably THE It.

One more thing. Although I am a fan of the miniseries, I agree that it doesn't hold up well. I admire the settings and can acknowledge its limitations, but all this chatter of it being so much scarier than the new one is... interesting. I do find the music and atmosphere of the miniseries creepy, along with Curry obviously, but apart from that, the majority of it does not scream terrifying compared to the new one. It's actually unintentionally funny at times. But, I guess Curry's Pennywise is all one needs to feel the chills.

I agree, new Pennywise could have done with a few more lines.
That was probably my only gripe with the film, is that IT could have had a bit more dialogue.
It could have done without the CGI too but then I'm not sure how else they would have been able to full off certain scenes without it.

Films don't scare me these days either. So, I literally never expect to be scared before watching horrors.
IT 2017 was just a great film overall IMO. Although, I still appreciate certain aspects of the mini series.
Mainly just Curry's performance and the music/score.

I think the relationship between the children was the best part of the film even though it needed more character development for them. You can tell they were a team and that was sweet, but I really didn't feel the same connection with these characters as I did with the ones in the novel or even with characters from other horror movies.

I absolutely loved the new Pennywise. Just his make up and costume alone was amazing. I think he played the part just as well as Curry.
