The next revolution (my theory...) My Salty Review of IT... [may contain spoilers] View all posts >

The CGI is way overdone. The house on Niebolt made me think of Monster House. Pennywise is more monster than clown. The leper is an over-exaggerated lanky dude. All of the settings felt too "epic-y" where you feel like the story takes place in a fantasy rather than an actual town you'd find in the real world, making the whole thing a little unrelatable. 90 percent of the shots are either low angle, tracking, or dutch angle shots, lessening its effectiveness in times when such shots were adequate. In all honesty, this movie passes as TV movie quality if it weren't for all fuck's and shit's the kids say throughout the film. But it has heart, so people generally give consent for its horror being mediocre and drenched in clichés and effects. Really nothing to spoil. Every scary scene is exposed in the trailers. I was so confused by it when i saw it for the first time. I was only 14. But i tried it a second time when i was probably a junior and it quickly became a favorite film of mine. It's slow, but deep. The acting by the entire cast was exceptional. Thomas Newman's score was endearingly haunting. The story is original and interesting. It belongs in a vault with Sunset Boulevard and Citizen Kane. Stan was the boy scout. Couldn't say anything about your question though... I don't compare this movie to the book too much. The book is just too big to squeeze all it's goodies into a feature film, albeit, two feature films. Same goes for the miniseries. As for comparing the new movie with the miniseries, it's not like i prefer one over the other. I believe a movie should just be able to stand on its own feet. The challenge in making IT a screen adaptation is knowing which elements to include in order to execute both the fear and heart that is themed throughout the original source material. I just couldn't suspend my disbelief when it came to the horror scenes in the new movie. It felt too.... staged. As for the heart, the new movie obviously did well. But mainly for Bill's character and his relationship with Georgie. Maybe for Bev as well. I do prefer Seth Green's Richie more than the Stranger Things' kid. Although he did make me laugh, i felt he just came off as purely annoying. Minus the hilarious crass humor, his acting was equivalent to what you would find on a Disney Channel movie. The kid who played Ben nailed his role. Mike's character was decent, but the lack of his screen time amputated what I believe was a major key to the story. And Stan, well, he was the token Jew. I won't feel upset when he kills himself in the next movie because I really never got to know him on a deeper level than, he's the Jewish friend. Bottom line, this story really just needs a whole netflix series. The miniseries definitely had a huge amount of flaws, but the new version did not compensate for them. And honestly, if it weren't for the miniseries, i don't believe the new version would have had the amount of marketing leverage as it had. And as for whining about it... yeah, so what? I'm just as sorry that people found this picture satisfying as they are sorry for me for disliking it. I really wanted to enjoy this film. Sincerely. I'm not wanting to force to change someone's opinion, but i'll give my two cents to at least help them understand my conviction. Part of discussing art is taking a critical view on things and being honest about your reactions to it. I agree to disagree with you and the majority of people who saw this movie, but I still stand by my opinions. P.S. I didn't mean to assume anyone is a virgin for liking this film. That was a tongue-in-cheek comment that referenced the line in the movie when Richie says something to the same measure to his friends. So cheers mate. Let's be happy we each have our own perspectives. Yes it is... Or maybe you just have to be a virgin in order to see why this movie is valid. 😜 I agree bobbydallas. The first scene with Pennywise made the rest of the film hard to live up to. The reason I loved the miniseries was pennywise just appearing off in the distance, casually fucking with your mind. This movie lacked that kind of subtlety (an exception might be the kids show that was on TV... first at Bev's house we hear the audio of the show and the kids are talking about playing in the sewers and floating; then again with the Tommyknockers-esque scene when the kids and pennywise are telling Henry to kill them all.) I keep saying i wanted to see pennywise manifest himself in the arcade game Richie was playing or even have Ben listening to NKOTB on his headphones when they suddenly yhe lyrics of one of their songs starts singing something like, "you're gonna die fatboy! And you'll float too! Oh oh oh oh-oh! The fright stuff!" Like come on movie... UTILIZE all the 80s shit you shoehorned into this story to scare the fuck out of us with rather than just as bait for Stanger Things fanboys and nostalgia-hungry millenials. This movie had the scare factor equivalent of the Goosebumps series in the 90s. Everyone has their own taste. I respect that. But this movie was nothing but bread and sugar and being sold as if it's a real cake. The horror lost its flavor as quick as a cheap stick of gum does. The scenes were knitted together like a tacky quilt. Here's the formula: Introduce a scary set. Have the kid walk right up to it even though he's obviously scared. Have a CGI clown monster thing that isn't very scary but just obnoxiously makes a bunch of noise and has seizure-like activity. Then it goes away. Richie makes a dick joke. Cut to the next scene. Rinse and repeat. I didn't care that the kids were scared. Many times throughout the movie i felt like they were playing pretend. It was just... boring. I can't see why people are treating it like a masterpiece. Having hated the movie, the kids show was actually one of the scariest parts for me. That's the kind of shit i was hoping to see more of. Because a CGI monster clown is just too alien and unrelatable to haunt me. I want It to make me scared of turning on the TV or radio or flip through photo albums because he might subtly appear. When bev came home and you cluld hear the kids show in the background talkimg about playing in the sewers and floating... fucking shit. That's eerie as hell! Why didn't they put the clown in the arcade machine richie was playing? Why didn't It creep up in Ben's headphones while listening to New Kids? Imagine your listening to a boy band and they start singing "float float flo-o-o-oat! The right stuff!" Just subtly creeping into their everyday lives, you know? This movie did not haunt me. All the scares wore off as soon as they were executed. Lame. View all replies >
