Ugly CGI

You seen the trailer? Where is that rough, unpolished look of the first three movies? Here it seems that the vehicles themselves are 3D-computer models, not to mention the fake-looking desert and the skies. What's going on!?

reply

Had immediately the same impression. Fury Road was truly an eye-candy, cgi was used only where it is needed.
Now the cars are fully cgi, so the environment. Bad animation, bad composing. Distracting as usual.
Especially because George Miller and the hole production/marketing campagne was so proud of the fact, that most of the car chase scenes in Fury Road were practically.

We all loved it for exactly that.

Now this. Why?

reply

Probably because Fury Road barely broke even, so they're cutting corners to save money.

reply

Yep, you're probably right. George is also probably too old to go back out and shoot a real Mad Max movie again.

reply

Tell me about it.

One of the things that most stand out for me is not only how gritty and raw the original films looked, but also how distinctively Australian they were in their scenery and landscapes.

Fury Road and this, on the other hand, just look like an overproduced cartoon, a generic CGI-created, nowhere-in-particular, post-apocalypse theme park.

reply

Looks like Attack of the Clones. Genosis or whatever.

reply

Exactly. Looks like it was made in 2002.

reply

I couldn’t agree more. And while Fury Road may have done a lot practically, the CGI that was there stuck out like a swollen kangaroo testicle. This new movie will struggle mightily to break even.

reply

90% of the effects presented in Mad Max: Fury Road were achieved practically. The film's behind-the-scenes footage also showed how CGI was only used as the icing on the cake for practical stunt work, which would have looked good even without visual enhancements.

Let's not forge that Fury Road was in development hell for decades before being filmed but even its filming was marred by several conflicts that emerged from its reliance on practically creating dangerous stunts. COVID apparently paused filming back in 2022 (weird since COVID is long over).

Maybe it's just so you can forget this movie and make you remember Fury Road as OG and canon. Prequels never really do as well as the OG.
