Great until... (spoilers)

The VIPs show up.

I know, I get it, the VIPs are meant to represent us, the viewers who comment and joke on the characters' decisions and actions.

They are still annoying with their banter and ruin the ambiance carefully built by the show until then. The room full of motionless naked woman and the ridiculous golden animal masks that would most likely make it really hard to drink or see the game don't help.

I wish they had handled this with way more gravitas.

Also, if they pay to watch the Squid game, why skip the first 4 rounds?

reply

yeah that was pretty stupid, I ff through most of those scenes,

the doctor and the detective story went no where and really wasnt needed.

reply

The doctor did bring some details into the story. Like the fairness of the game and the "egality/equity" of the system. And how even the ones in charge of that equality can be corrupted by some extra monetary gains.

Although there are some things that don't really line up in both cases:
How did the corrupt guardians team form? They were supposed to not know anything about each other? Or thee squares are allowed to see the files of the other members of the staff and of the "gamers"???

reply

You are an extremely wealthy man? Because that is what the VIPs are meant to represent. The fact that you think it's meant to represent 'you' is hilarious.

reply

We watch desperate people play deadly game for our entertainment, just like them. The fact they are wealthy is irrelevant.

reply

The fact that they are wealthy is a major POINT of the series.

reply

Also the fact they probably american.
That it is kind of disappointing because the Post-colonialism and "rich are bad" plot is really unoriginal.

reply

You think that all of the VIPs are American? You think that extremely wealthy characters behaving badly is commentary on all wealthy people . . .or maybe its just these guys and not everybody with a lot of money, huh champ?

reply

oh boy

It is what we called a symbol.
From what I read they are suppose to be American.

reply

What did you read that said they were supposed to be Americans?

reply

Unless the voices were re-dubbed.. They were clearly American accents

reply

At least one of them was Chinese, and the host, as we all know, was korean - while most of them had american accents, i think they were supposed to represent the richest of the rich - and apparently it was decided that most of them would be americans - lol

Based on one line said by one of the VIP's, it would appear that these games are held all over the world - hence the quote, the game held in korea is one of the best this year. I dunno if the contestants are always koreans or not - given that one of the main points the film was making is that Koreans are some of the most indebted people in the world, behind the Chinese - it wouldn't surprise me, given the narrative.

It's also possible that these games are held simultaneously all over the world and these VIP's decided to visit the Korean games in particular. We don't know how many VIP's are there - so perhaps other games get their own VIP visits - possibly even at the same time (there could be 100's of VIP's).

reply

There was only one guy that sounded American (the fat one)
The rest of them sounded like Europeans that speak accentless English and one VIP sounded Asian.

reply

The VIPs watched the early rounds on video. And I don't think they are meant to represent the viewer, but the super wealthy.

reply

Yes, the oligarchs that quietly control everything. Kind of like real life.
