Brilliant Moments *** Spoilers ***

I'm sure people will find things to complain about with this film but the introductions given to the two "special guests" were just fantastic!

People were literally cheering and clapping in our cinema. Sure it was cinema mainlining nostalgia once again but hearing people being so happy all around you was a pretty special experience...

My theater was also full of cheering and clapping when the two Spider-Men showed up. It was loud. Surreal, people were so happy.

Another brilliant moment was when Electro said: "Man, I hope there's a black Spider-Man out there in the multiverse." That quote had me dying.

I was kind of hoping we'd see something set up for that in a post credits scene. Would have been a cherry on the cake moment, although I guess it would have detracted from the film itself so maybe Electro's comment was enough...

I don't think the upcoming Spider-Verse movie includes Tobey and Andrew.

But the Third Spider-Verse movie could potentially include them. They haven't developed it yet. It would be cool if they did that.

reply

There is a reference to Miles in Homecoming with Miles' uncle

reply

I think that's a nod to Miles Morales

reply

Yes, I know. That's what made it funny

My theater clapped and cheered many times as well. And everyone outside the theater was discussing all the clever surprises well after it was over. I’m glad I was able to get tickets because almost every showtime slot was sold out. But I absolutely loved it. It fixed several problems I had with the last two solo MCU Spidey movies (and possibly other versions?). I had a couple of minor issues, but this one was simply great in my opinion. I highly recommend it.

Same with us! Made a fairly late decision to go on opening night and struggled looking across different cinemas / time slots to find enough seats together but really glad we went. I just knew that if we didn't make it then we'd inevitably read something about the film / see spoilers.

Got to say as well - Great job by Andrew Garfield! He made so many denials and saying people were going to be disappointed, etc. Even although we sort of knew it was hugely likely they'd be in it, I think his efforts more than anything made me (at least!) think maybe it was just going to be a relatively disappointing CGI small cameo addition rather than what we got.

reply

Agreed!

I liked everything except the ending where no one knows who Peter Parker is. That part is just dumb. Sorry, but this part is just so stupid and makes 0 sense to me.

reply

Yeah, that was a bit of a head scratcher. The original spell was going to make them forget Peter Parker was Spiderman but in the end they completely forget about the existence of Peter Parker instead. Completely different thing...

reply

I agree with you, I thought that was really weird.

I mean I somewhat understand it, but it felt cruel. Why not just have MJ be killed by the Green Goblin at that point then? Since they basically break up through the "forget Peter Parker" spell.

reply

Seems likely the intent was the "reset" the MCU Spider-Man to his classic version, lost and alone with no support system

I saw that as their intent but I agree it's incredibly cruel

As for why they went so far, in-movie, I assumed the spell had to be that much stronger to close up all the multiverse leaks. It was no longer enough to erase "Peter Parker is Spider-Man" from everyone's memories. Strange had to go further to be sure that no one else leaked through. If no one even knows who Peter Parker is in the MCU universe, then there's nothing left to attract all the other "visitors."

None of which explains how Tom Hardy's Eddie and Bane got through, since neither of them seemed to know Spider-Man at all. But it was a fun credit-cookie.

reply

They still could have done it with the original spell that no one knows Spider-Man is Peter Parker. It was even looking like all his hard work in school is going to be for nothing because he had a book about a GED.

reply

i actually think it's really great.
it finally gets us the parker/spiderman we've been waiting for. poor, no friends, worried about the rent, and feeling responsible for the death of a relative.
feels like a pretty neat little trick they pulled off to me.

reply

I thought the scene where both Spider-men were introduced was just OK.
Tobey just casually walks in, I was expecting something better.

Regarding the "forget Peter Parker", it's Sony clearly wanting to keep Spider-man free from MCU. Now they can do whatever they want. Have their own Spider-man solo universe.

reply

My theater went bananas like everybody else's. So much so that Tobey's entrance kind of got buried by the excitement. I felt he was revealed too close on the heels of Garfield's entrance. We were all too excited that the rumors were true for the second entrance to have the impact it should have. They should have spread that out. I'll probably change my mind after I've seen this a dozen times, but for a no spoilers first viewing, it didn't play well.

I'm thrilled with the ending. We finally cut this Spider-Man free of all his MCU baggage.
