The way people were talking about this, I expected something I haven't seen before. I didn't even find it scary or give me a good sense of tension. 6/10

Some great horror imagery. Several memorable scenes that grant longevity for this movie in one's mind. Good character development with decent acting. Some funny moments. Decent production values.
If this was released back in the 80s it'd be a beloved cult classic.
Movies like The Boogeyman and The Last Voyage of the Demeter suffer greatly from being very forgettable. Talk to Me has enough quirks and flavor to last.
Pro tip. It's more difficult year upon year to do something new. It was a piece of piss back in 1972 to do something no one had done before but it's now 2023. When's the last time a horror movie reinvented the wheel? It's best to just enjoy good execution of slight slants on the common genre conventions.
I think the hype ruined it for me. They were making it sound like this was something that was never before seen and it felt all too familiar.
shareHype is like that. I've been in the same boat as you, when your expectations are sky high even if the movie is good it can be a big let down.
For the first 30 mintues of Talk to Me I was a bit let down too. The hype for this, with it's IMDb score, user reviews (many calling it the best horror movie of the last few years) and very strong critic reviews (95% on RottenTomatoes), was through the roof.
You might enjoy it more upon a rewatch at some point. I've often found that to be the case for myself. When rewatching you already know what will happen and you already have evaluated the movie for yourself, with rewatches you just take the movie for what it is as opposed to being let down because you were expecting/hoping for more. I enjoyed Hereditary and Get Out more on rewatches, both those movies suffered from extreme, hard to live up to, hype.
Yeah, I probably will watch it again somewhere waaaaay down the line. If I go into it a second time knowing I will probably be disappointed again, I may end up liking it thinking it wasn't so bad. That's what happened when I saw The Exorcist.

shareNever trust the hype, it's all part of the spiel now for years and due to gullible GenZ cunts on social media, anything being said about movies now before release, or even after, is to be taken with a huge grain of salt. That can mean both things, it being better, or worse.
Usually, it is the latter, because that majority of media is left-leaning, so they will hype the according things that contain "the message" or at least talking points of it and usually that means bad movies. Even in this one, we HAD to to tick that check box with that one non-binary thing of a person, because God forbid we have normal people in a movie these days.
Then again, it is actually very realistic considering the massive amount of mentally ill kids among GenZ. What was it, around 30% of them are sexually confused in one way or another? Gay, bi, nothing, everything, fantasy genders, you name it.
That aside, I actually enjoyed the movie, it did a lot of things right and well, other things... not so much. The whole hand thing was a bit dumb, I found it difficult to believe they'd all be totally into seeing rotting ghosts and worse on their "trips" and while the movie tried to make it seem they are under some sort of high or "spell" and hence want to do more, it never worked for me. It was too absurd.

shareI guess I was lucky, I had no idea there was any hype. I just saw a trailer in front of some other A24 movie and thought, "Looks like it might be good, I'll check it out this October for Halloween month." It didn't change my life or anything, but I thought it was a good watch. Glad I didn't I sit down and fold my arms across my chest and go "OK MR SUPER HYPED BIGSHOT MOVIE THAT EVERYONE SAYS IS SOOOO GOOD. GO AHEAD. IMPRESS ME."

First time directors and no big name actors, so to that extent I didn't expect anything major, but the reviews made me feel like there was something special there.
