What kind of people...

watch a show about Frankenstein and Dracula and say: Oh, I know how we can improve that. Let's add race relations and Nazis.

Sadly it's becoming a staple of modern television and cinema. I guess it's a blessing in disguise as I've cancelled more subscriptions this year than ever before and am spending less time watching garbage and more time outside enjoying life.

I agree. Doesn't make sense. From a Victorian London full of vampires, witches, werewolves and reanimated dead to a 1950's Los Angeles with none of those. However, Natalie Dormer seems to be cast a s a devilish figure who is causing tensions to boil over.

Better to set it in turn of the century (1900) L.A. and include folklore creatures/entities from Mexican culture, Native American culture, immigrant beliefs (Russian, Jewish, Irish, Chinese). All meshing together in the New World.

Dormer is wonderful but that's not enough to keep me watching.

And? Does it mean that we need to be reminded that these things are bad every time we switch on a TV?

Penny Dreadful was a variation of Alan Moore's "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman" - a chance to see some of the most iconic characters and hero archetypes of the Victorian age interact. It wasn't about politics - it was about familiar stories presented in a recognizable and yet fresh way. However the authors were smart and talented enough to weave various social issues of the age into the stories.
Which is how it's supposed to be done.
It seems that there are less and less people in the American TV-industry capable of even understanding the difference between art and propaganda.

Hollywood standard producers?

reply

Wow. I LOVED Penny Dreadful, but this is a real wrong turn, based on the first episode. A penny dreadful was an English illustrated novel of gothic horror. It has no relationship at all to Latin culture. Yes, Latin culture has the Brujo occult tradition, but it is not the same as the European occult tradition, no penny dreadful books, not at all. Natalie Dormer and Nathan Lane ROCK in this. We’ve got Nazis and the boring guy who played the Frankenstein monster in this as a bridge to THE REAL PENNY DREADFUL. But this is a travesty of the original series, a cash grab for the Latin market.
