This is the type of balls Game of Thrones usually has. The remaining three episodes could have been about Cersei/Ironborn/maybe a couple of important characters escaping at Winterfell (like Bran and Tyrion maybe), some of the lesser characters from the series whose stories kind of got pushed to the side could have resurfaced like Benjen.
I thought there was some controversy over whether he was actually dead or not. If not Benjen it could be someone else. Maybe the faceless men could have gotten involved and we could have got some more closure about them. I don't know .. my point is that it would have been more creative/original direction to go.
They should have fled Winterfell after its destruction, keeping just one step ahead of the Others. Then, eventually our characters would find themselves stuck in between the white walker army, and Cersei in King's Landing. Nowhere to escape to. What great scenarios that would lead to. But nope, the Night King got killed by Arya and this show has been in a steady decline since Season 5.
I have to agree. Giving it all to Arya was a mistake. At least have John Snow fighting with the Night King before Arya sneaks in. There were White Walkers all around. Arya just somehow gets past them and appears right behind the Night King.
Its a trope at this point. And GoT was known for avoiding those kind of tropes.
I know, I always thought the Night King viewed Jon Snow as a threat. So was expecting a final battle between those two, and then have Aria save the day. But the night king didn’t really seem to care either way about him. Just left him to the dead. Once again.
Personally, I'd have preferred a 2 episode 'The Long Night/Battle at Winterfell' ...with Ep3 being the battle entirely taking place outside the castle walls at night, where the North holds as long as possible until finally forced to retreat inside the walls, also ending with an uncertain status of Danny and Jon (and their dragons) after a fierce aerial battle with the NK on his wight-dragon. Perhaps where the NK ambushes them in the storm. We are lead to believe he was able to kill them.
Ep4 starts beginning at daybreak, with heavy overcast and snow falling. The remaining Winterfell defenders manning the walls and looking out upon the horde of blue-eyed zombies as the fire from the trenches extinguish. The NK arrives dramatically on his dragon, landing upon the battle field and his white walker lieutenants join him. He dramatically raises all the dead laying upon it, once again swelling his army's ranks. The look of absolute defeat on the faces of Jaime, Brienne, Davos, and remaining soldiers ...with dread music building and building.
As the final assault begins -- walls are scaled and gates breached -- an aerial view shows the vastness of the zombie army and how futile any defense will be. It looks like this is it for the good guys, but then, over the horizon Danny and Jon both coming riding to the rescue taking the NK off guard and destroying his wight dragon and laying waste to a chunk of his army. (At least those still outside the walls) The NK, realizing he's made a mistake in not confirming he'd killed them, jumps on a horse and along with his white walker lieutenants makes a dash for the woods, by then figuring out that is where Bran is 'hiding'.
You can put the ending together yourself, but it would be fine if Arya is still the one who ends up killing him, but that is where the battle would end.
It then leaves two episodes to wrap up the mundane chore of who will sit on the Iron Throne.
My favorite parts of the series is the backstabbing/outwitting/outlasting/politics going on as they all try to outmaneuver one another for power. You seem to like the epic dragon/medieval battle scenes. I kind of like that stuff too but to a much lesser extent.
I was skipping ahead in the episode after about 40-50 mins due to the constant plot armor (e.g. characters constantly escaping their deaths). I had to suspend belief way too often to the point where i was just rolling my eyes during most of the 2nd half of the episode.
There's no way i would have been able to handle ANOTHER episode of this 'battle'.
I was counting on this also. The build up of the white walkers was always there hiding in the shadows. They were the ominous monster lurking in the woods while everyone else was too busy worrying about the throne to care. Them winning eas what I was hoping for after the red wedding. Now it feels like a complete waste of time. They literally meant nothing to the show. They could have been written out from the first page and it wouldnt have changed the main focus of the plot one bit. Waste of time.
