Perhaps the best film about Faith

It made me admire the devotion of the Christians, and yet had me thinking them mad for not saving people by simply treading on a symbol.

Was the film suggesting that God is in the ‘Silence’ behind the physical world and not in the trinkets of faith?

Then again, the religious teachings and symbols of faith are what give many lives purpose, without which humans can fall into nihilism and pernicious ideologies like Communism. Christ is not a bad figure to follow.

Did Rodriguez and Ferreira really relinquish Christianity or was it too embedded? Was Rod actually holding a crucifix during his cremation at the end or was it filmic symbolism suggesting he remained Christian on the most private level?

reply

"...pernicious ideologies like Communism"? And capitalism is the real thing? Let me guess: When Jesus cleaned the temple the purpose was to fight evil, evil communism, right?

reply

Communism hadn’t been invented back then 🤦🏻‍♂️

Capitalism creates the most desirable societies in the world, where people live free, prosperous lives. It works. Communism doesn’t, and only causes immiseration, suffering and death.

reply

OMG. Sorry, but I only know a handful of people (and not in person) who live really free. You fell for the most stupid hoax, fooling people that their life as slaves will end one day. You know the reason for most, if not all wars? Yep, capitalism...

reply

Vague nonsense. Under communism you have no freedom and live as a slave to the one party state. You most likely live in a capitalist country because it affords the best standard of living, which is why the world climbs over each other to come and live in the free, prosperous, capitalist West.

There’s no necessary link whatsoever between capitalism and wars - ludicrous, especially while you’re at the same time making excuses for communist countries which routinely go to war with other nations - see North Korea and China today, and of course Soviet Russia, and they’re permanently at war with their own population who live as slaves.

It’s astonishing that you’ve been duped to embrace Communism, it’s even worse than Nazism. Wake up.

reply

There are only two kinds of people talking this way: Seducers and seduced ones... And btw.: Nazis were capitalists as well...

reply

The Nazi Party’s full name was ‘The National Socialist German Workers Party’ so you’re wrong there too. You’ve been suckered into adopting an evil ideology, and your dismissals of capitalism (while you live in a capitalist country and enjoy all of capitalism’s fruits) is laughably bad. Wake up.

reply

So definitely a seducer, noticed...

I am German and I know the Nazi Party's full name pretty well. The name was just meant to attract as many people as possible, be it nationalists, socialists, workers... No real meaning behind the words.

You should watch Conspiracy, 2001. A closer look at the links between Nazi Party and capitalism. Of course only if you can stand it to be cured from your illusions.

And I don't enjoy any of "capitalism's fruits". As mentioned before only a few people do.

Yeah, wake up...

reply

Wrong. You live in a capitalist country and enjoy the unprecedented standard of living it affords every citizen, which is why people across the world climb over each other to emigrate to the West.

You’re an overprivileged ignoramus who has been suckered into the communist cult, if you lived in a communist country you’d soon wake up to the misery and poverty it inflicts on every citizen (except, of course, the ruling class who hoard all of the nation’s wealth as it collapses). Wake up.

reply

"the ruling class who hoard all of the nation’s wealth as it collapses" - That's why communism fails: Communist leaders copy this behavior exactly from their capitalist counterparts.
Overpriviliged? Only because I recognize bs when someone like you is going to sell it?
Ignoramus? It takes one to know one...

reply

Err no, Communists are psychotic authoritarians - that’s why their regimes slaughter emiserate millions of people every time they take power. Your attempt to sugggest that they’re ‘just copying capitalists’ is the most hilariously pathetic excuse for human evil that I’ve ever heard. You’ve been completely brainwashed.

You’re overprivileged because you’ve enjoyed the fruits and comforts of capitalism so much while showing no gratitude towards it that you’ve become gluttonous, over-pampered, and completely disconnected from reality - which is how the communist cult was able to inculcate you so easily.

No, actually it’s necessary to not be an ignoramus in order to identify one. You are an ignoramus because you’re completely ignorant about communism and its evils, and you don’t understand capitalism either.

reply

Again: Capitalism is the reason for every war since the beginning. Capitalism is the reason for slavery, holocaust and most of all committed crimes on this planet. Capitalism is the reason for starving kids in Africa. Capitalism is the reason for the extinction of 1000 species per year. Capitalism is the reason for the climate change, for corruption and greed.
But hey, let's become good capitalists so we can (MAYBE!!!) switch from human victim to inhuman offender one day.
YOU don't see, but I am brainwashed?
And btw: When did I ever say that I am communist? Capitalism is so stupid 1-dimensional...

reply

It's the best one I can think of, certainly.

The film, I think, was getting at what is really important in a believer's life. Do symbols matter? What actions should you take? What is morally right? How far are you willing to go for belief, and is it worth it? Is there actually anybody listening, or is it just silence? Should you speak out for your faith or should you be silent? What's stronger?

It's a complex film, and one of my theories as to why it performed poorly at the box office is because it doesn't cheerlead for Christianity (and faith in-general), but it doesn't condemn or mock it, either. As such, it challenges everybody who sits down to watch it - believer and atheist alike - and that's what I love about it, but many would find that too uncomfortable. It's too real. It's too real a struggle with doubt and faith to be comforting for anybody. (Also, of course, it was under-marketed).

Should have been nominated, if not won, the Best Picture award. I didn't see Moonlight (and many others that year), so I can't judge, of course, if it was truly best picture, but they had nine films on the ticket and room for a tenth.

SPOILERS

My take is that they did not relinquish Christianity, or at least Rodriguez did not. Some of the pained expression of Neeson's could indicate his turmoil at being forced to try and apostacize Rodriguez. I can't quite recall, but I believe most of his interactions are under the watchful eye of the Inquisitor, so he was surviving.

The final shot - with the crucifix - to me means that Rodriguez kept his religion, but kept it secret. In fact, I believe that he not only kept his religion, but he was spreading the faith. Who put that crucifix there? I'm guessing Rodriguez's whole family were Catholics, and possibly others in his region who would have arranged his funeral.

And, of course, the final shot also hammers home once more the power of belief, and whether it is better to be a good person and keep the faith or to value symbols.

Well said.

Thank you.

I didn't like it, Ace, but you make me want to give it another try; great commentary.

reply

Well, if you do go for it, let me know if you revise your opinion. And if you still don't like it, I can respect that as your own, personal taste.

I liked Black Robe over this movie
