Is it flopping yet?

Please tell me it's falling well short of expectations. Those of us who care about the future of American film have prayed that big budget empty comic book movies like Wonder Woman will begin to flop resoundingly and force change and experimentation in the film industry.

reply

No, it's a great movie.

So fuck off.

reply

You are perhaps not the best person to give advice on movies. You have made four responses on here, two to Thor movies and two to the new Wonder Woman.

reply

You made 258 as of now. And you're still a giant tool, who post crap like this, go figure. ;)

Out of curiosity, what kind of change would you like to see, that only the sacrifice of CBMs can promote?

Also, as a bonus, I'll make you a free telling of fortunes. CBMs will die off some after Infinity War and Justice League are done.

reply

Well said - might not have used that exact phrasing myself, but you're right on the money.

There are plenty of art-film flops you can see. From BO Mojo:

SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Wonder Woman is looking strong out of the gate, delivering an estimated $38.85 million on Friday, which includes $11 million from Thursday previews. This is nearly identical to the performance of the first Guardians of the Galaxy, which brought in $11.2 million from previews, delivered $37.8 million on Friday and ultimately opened with $94.3 million, suggesting a $95-100 million opening is in the offing. Wonder Woman received an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences, which was 52% female vs. 48% male.

reply

This is, if true, devastating news to those of us who viewed the flopping of these bloated superhero movies as strategically important if the film industry is to survive as an art form

reply

The film industry is not just America or Hollywood.

reply

It's never been an art form. It's been a money form.

reply

It's the art of making money through movies.

reply

It was bad, there are a lot of shills defending this crap online.

reply

Movies like this are built up by incredible hype that usually can't be sustained once people start seeing the movie and this has happened countless times over the years. Wonder Woman's marketing has been based around "the critics are praising it"--whoever these corporate shills known as "critics" are nowadays. I hope it's as bad as you say because it will affect word of mouth on the film and a larger than expected dropoff can be expected its second week.

I have a LONG list of problems with this movie, I'll try to sum it up succinctly:

1. German soldiers are basically portrayed as being as evil as Nazis.
2. The film basically insinuates Diana ended World War 1 because she gave a shit. I SWEAR TO GOD, spoilers, the German soldiers started hugging the Allied soldiers that were with Diana when Ares was defeated!
3. The Native American soldier was inserted into the movie solely to bash white people.
4. Men are bashed at every chance.
5. Ares apparently wants World War 1 to go on forever, but um, what was he doing the past few millennia when the Amazons were on the island, isolated?
6. The Amazons knew every language, including English, which is relatively new, I believe, and we're talking modern English, but haven't upgraded their weapons since ancient Greek times?
7. Diana's moping about war gets truly annoying the 17th time she does it.
8. Even though it's implied Ares was behind wars, the movie's writer seems to forget about World War 2, Vietnam, Korea and everything else that's happened since then.

To put it simply, this is a war movie that's a chick flick, like Hurt Locker. Don't believe anyone that says it's good. I even heard one guy snoring near the final scene. I almost fell asleep too. It was bad.

1. German soldiers are basically portrayed as being as evil as Nazis.

- The film narrative was referencing the effects of a culture in the German forces of brutality and war which caused civilian atrocities, something history shows can crop up in any society where war occurs. Only two German characters were portrayed as Nazi-like.

2. The film basically insinuates Diana ended World War 1 because she gave a shit. I SWEAR TO GOD, spoilers, the German soldiers started hugging the Allied soldiers that were with Diana when Ares was defeated!

- Diana is a demigoddess who removes the influence of Ares from the world - that's the premise, and it works if you accept that this is a superhero/fantasy film about that idea.

3. The Native American soldier was inserted into the movie solely to bash white people.

- Maybe, but have you considered the narrative function of a comparison between invasion and atrocity events of different eras and the suggeston therefore that there is a repeating pattern of human behaviour?

4. Men are bashed at every chance.

- Not undeserved criticism but obviously a fairminded perspective knows there is more to the gender picture than flaws or faults.

5. Ares apparently wants World War 1 to go on forever, but um, what was he doing the past few millennia when the Amazons were on the island, isolated?

- As Ares says in the film, he places ideas/technologies in the hands of humanity and lets them decide how to act - he influences their behaviour but does not compel them. Often enough this can result in conflicts which is precisely what he wants because he is working towards the goal of destroying humanity. World War 1 ws the latest results of his meddling in human minds.

6. The Amazons knew every language, including English, which is relatively new, I believe, and we're talking modern English, but haven't upgraded their weapons since ancient Greek times?

- True, this isn't explained in the film. No doubt there is an attempt to keep

reply

(continued):

their culture "unsullied" by most aspects of human civilisation - it is probably a policy of resisting materialism.

7. Diana's moping about war gets truly annoying the 17th time she does it.

- I don't think it comes across as excessive however many times she might mention it.

8. Even though it's implied Ares was behind wars, the movie's writer seems to forget about World War 2, Vietnam, Korea and everything else that's happened since then.

- I agree. That seems to be a problem unless we're to understand that humanity is still influenced by the legacy of the past when Ares existed and helped cause warfare. There is also the more dominate influence of peace movements and new political structures that encourage cooperation and the observation of human rights that have emerged since World War One such as the United Nations.

It does not bash men at all. Dr. Poison is an evil woman, as evil as the other villains. Other women like Etta Candy are seen as comic relief and the Amazons argue with each other, not knowing what the right thing to do is automatically. Steve Trevor is a hero who succeeds at savings lives as often as Diana does. And his commandos are shown to be heroic by continuing to fight even after they've been paid.

reply

QUIT LYING!!!

You're an idiot, if you couldn't notice the male and white bashing in the movie, you are SLOW.

reply

yep Meatron1970, totally agree....made a few points on all the logical gaps in this crapfest of a movie myself in my own thread...but you made some really good points here, nicley done mate.

reply

Go find a site for the hateful ones.

reply

Unfortunately...from what I see...I think this is their site. Fuck.

reply

We're not allowed to disagree with you, snowflake?

reply

The movie is falling well short of expectations for those wanting to see "worthy social realism", gritty drama or vanity projects. Instead Wonder Woman gives you relevant entertainment of such a high calibre that after a screening of the film you are sure to be staggering out of the cinema gobsmacked and in a daze of wonderment. ;)

reply

One thing to bear in mind is that when a certain film performs well, that money isn't entirely poured back into its own sequel. The studio overall benefits, and that can roll on to other projects, including ones that could be regarded as more experimental, art house, and serious. Studios like winning awards also, but something has to pay the bills. :-)

reply

Hate to break it to ya, but no...it's not going to flop. It's a success right out of the gate.

reply

Nope this is a winner with the critics, the fans and most importantly, the box office. The future of American film is entertainment, always has been always will be so deal with it.

reply

No.
