Why remake Mortal Kombat?
Like the pointless remake of the Tomb Raider movie, I don't see the point of remaking Mortal Kombat. The 1995 version was already a faithful adaptation of the video game, it wasn't like the 90s Super Mario Bros. movie, where you could justify a remake that would be a much more faithful adaptation of the game.
If they wanted to "Reboot" the film franchise and just call the new movie "Mortal Kombat" anyway, all they had to do was directly adapt the 2011 video game and basically make it so that decades later, Raiden (AGAIN played by Christopher Lambert!) sends a telegraphic message to himself in the past, and the events of the 1995 movie then begin to unfold differently.
That would have been really clever seeing it in a live-action movie, and it would take a mere "video game movie" to a new level by having some talented Hollywood director recreate scenes from the 1995 film and put a new twist on them. Basically a "Back to the Future II" of the Mortal Kombat universe.
Alas, what could have been...
