Why remake Mortal Kombat?

Like the pointless remake of the Tomb Raider movie, I don't see the point of remaking Mortal Kombat. The 1995 version was already a faithful adaptation of the video game, it wasn't like the 90s Super Mario Bros. movie, where you could justify a remake that would be a much more faithful adaptation of the game.

If they wanted to "Reboot" the film franchise and just call the new movie "Mortal Kombat" anyway, all they had to do was directly adapt the 2011 video game and basically make it so that decades later, Raiden (AGAIN played by Christopher Lambert!) sends a telegraphic message to himself in the past, and the events of the 1995 movie then begin to unfold differently.

That would have been really clever seeing it in a live-action movie, and it would take a mere "video game movie" to a new level by having some talented Hollywood director recreate scenes from the 1995 film and put a new twist on them. Basically a "Back to the Future II" of the Mortal Kombat universe.

Alas, what could have been...

My opinion is that most of these video game movie adaptions feel extremely redundant because the games themselves are already quite cinematic. The recent Tomb Raider movie is probably the best example of this. I do not share the enthusiasm that a number of people seem to have for this MK B movie rebooot

These adaptations are extremely redundant. Makes no sense at all.

There are people like myself who long ago quit playing video games but who would still be interested in experiencing stories from these games through film.

I definitely think that Tomb Raider, with the right writers, could be turned into a fun adventure film franchise. The 2018 film sadly was write boring, but I blame for the creative talent for that, not the source material.

They are remaking everything these days, yo.
And they are making sequels to 20 year old dead franchises.
Welcome to modern Hollywood -

I suppose this shouldn't be a surprise, given that LA/San Francisco have turned into utter shitholes.

When I played Mortal Kombat X, I was like oh wow Mortal Kombat is basically Star Wars now. Instead of planets it has realms. It has gods, sorcerers, aliens, robots, ninjas, zombies, etc.

The 1990s movies were based on simple tournament-to-the-death tropes popular in the 80s, Van Damme's Bloodsport types. In fact, the character Johnny Cage is originally supposed to be Van Damme.

I think what they want to do this time is bringing out the lore more and less about tournament fighting thing. This movie is just the beginning. That's why they don't give us Johnny Cage yet. Obviously he's planned for the sequel.

Mortal Kombat has a lot of potential. If what I thought was what they were thinking, they're attempting to make an R-Rated Star Wars!
