In 2001, when I was 21, I hated this movie, however...

I just re-watched it again after 14 years and absolutely loved it. It was genius on so many levels; following that of a Kubrick film. I urge all to rewatch as an adult. I have changed intellectually, philosophically, politically, and grown as a person. I'm sure most of you have as well. It's a different movie for me now.

Same here. I hated it when I first watched it when it was first released. I like it now not only for the social and philosophical issues it addressed, among other things, but also because I cant conceive a child now due to an illness and I wished there was a sweet mecha boy I could adopt and love. So I relate to it on personal level as well. I totally appreciate the film more now.

I think in a sense, Spielberg did create a Kubrick film.

Kubrick's films have largely never fully been embraced by the populace, but only a small group that seems to want to look further, and deeper into them.

Take '2001,' which many just claimed as long and boring...but there are those that see something more within in.

"Thanks, guys." "So long, partner."

Even if the ‘sweet mecha boy’ remained a 10 year old forever, long after your death?

I liked it as a kid and loathe it as an adult. There are interesting ideas and themes present but they are all poorly executed. I wouldn't call this an intelligent think piece. It's more of an average sci-fi movie that periodically remembers that Kubrick was the greatest director ever.

When I first watched it, I just didn't like and probably didn't spend too much time thinking about why.

I watched it yesterday and I thought it was terrible. When it wasn't just being boring, it was being illogical or inexplicable, and had characters behaving in ways that didn't make sense. And then finally, the bizarre happy ending out-of-left field which I had totally forgot about was almost unwatchable.

I would suggest watching Benjamin Button also. I saw that movie when I was 23, now again when I am 31.

A very different experience.

That movie can touch your emotions the more you have experienced in life.

Back in 2001 i was 13 and i liked it very much on intellectual, philosophical and political level. Now, being 27, i still like it. Guess the emotional intelligence developes different. :)

Had the same feeling. First viewing I was 15, found it incredibly tedious. Now at 27 I find it thoughtful, fascinating and spellbinding to watch. I would even go so far and say it's one of Spielberg's best, despite the ending.

I think you just have to be mature enough to appreciate it! It's really a movie for adults, not for teens!

Why did you hate the ending ?

When i watched this movie at the time of release, i kinda hated the ending too, assuming those were aliens (in reality, all people assumed this so i thought it was so).
After a couple rewatchs, i realized they are advanced mechas, fulfilling the words of Joe .... "We are suffering for the mistakes they made because when the end comes, all that will be left is us"... Mechas evolved enough surviving humans (who knows, perhaps even went to space and then come back).
If you hear (or read) carefully what they say, you get they are intrigued by the boy-mecha that lived among humans.

Now, perhaps you just hated it because it was a lovey-dovey ending xD

I saw this as a kid, re-watched it as an adult and had a near identical reaction to it. It is a train wreck and had a budget that was unheard of by even today's standards.

reply

Loved it then, love it now. It's a great movie.

Thus movie is a piece of shit, FUCKING shit.

I was an adult when I watched it, have zero interest in inflicting it on me again, and believe this was the start of Steven Spielberg’s decline. Plus, Haley Joe Osment🤮🤮🤮.
“I am! I WAS!”? Please go fuck your pretentious, self-impressed self.
