Does Col. Tavington deserve to be amongst the greatest movie villains?

I think so, Jason Isaacs was awesome in the role.

Not even close

I think Isaacs' performance is fantastic, but the character isn't really great - it's too one-note. Again: Isaacs makes great use of what he's given, but it's just not that wonderful a character.

yeah, great acting, but his actions were too over the top to be anchored in reality.

Agreed. He's a workable villain in a story that needs one, but he isn't deeper than that. When we think about the great villains of cinema we think of people like Norma Desmond who is nuanced and relatable, or villains who seem realistic even in the totality of their evil, like the insectine nastiness of Nurse Ratched.

I put him in the same category as Clarence Bodiker in Robocop. Smart, calculating, and pure evil.

I’m from Ohio and I love how he said “Tell me about Ohio”

God no, Tavington is possibly the most one-dimensional villain ever put to screen, a total cartoon 🤣

reply

Not even close. Totally one dimensional and uninteresting. He’s just evil to be evil.
