Holds up really well

Just watched this again for the first time in years. Still pretty great. The only thing that gets worse is Kate Hudson's performance. Nothing special at all, and I can't believe she was considered the favorite to win the Oscar at the time.

Also, Jimmy Fallon still sticks out like a sore thumb, but not as bad as I remembered.

The choice of music is tremendous, obviously, might be my favorite thing about this movie. Feel Flows by The Beach Boys, America by Simon and Garfunkel, Tangerine by Zeppelin, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters. Just fit perfectly.

Yes, I agree totally. Including not too crazy about Hudson or Fallon in this.

Great movie!!!

I think a lot of people give Kate Hudson a hard time because of how her film career has panned out since Almost Famous. She's great as Penny Lane.

You keep on reminding me of a darkness only I can see

except

Kate Hudson's performance.

Really? I loved every single hand gesture even, and those looks! She said SO MUCH without saying anything.

I stll think it's a tremendous film. It takes me back, man!

Just watched it for the 1st time and thought it was pretty good - including Kate Hudson.

Just saw it for the first time, and wow, it's much better than I expected.
Having been a life-time "serious" fan of popular music, I think I was afraid AF was going to be silly and unconvincing.
While it can be debated how much this might have played out in real life, it was done very well. The band members were in touch with their "better angels," taking William in and treating him seriously and with affection. And thank goodness McDormand's character wasn't reduced to a shrill stereotype. Also, the ending avoided cliche.
Overall, this was a very pleasant movie that could have gone waaay wrong.
Glad I couldn't sleep and chanced upon it.

Just seen it for the first time tonight, definitely a film that’s aged well, I can’t remember ever seeing Kate Hudson in anything else so I thought she was fine in this I thought Billy Crudup was the standout of the performances though.

This movie will always be one of those types of movies that never really ages and is classic.

reply

Agreed. A great time capsule. It’s like American Graffiti. Fast Times.
