Yea right. 379 million world wide. More than half of its budget. Dont understand the hate and trash. This movie is a great box office movie and its the type of movie when expects for a super box office movie. Its funny, its enjoyable, its action packed, it has great special effects, its original, the cast is great. No over top cast. The draw speaks for itself. If it were so hated by the public it never even wouldve gone to 100 million. The film was released on 4k for it to be released on 4k then it must be acknowledge that it has a strong following if not it probably wouldnt have gotten passed vhs, dvd, and Never wouldve gotten to bluray.

Thanks, Wolf. It's all-around entertaining and easily the best Godzilla flick I've seen. So the creature isn't really the Godzilla from the 50s-70s (or whatever), so what? It's an amusing and thrilling alternative interpretation.

Glad Wuchak, to find someone who agrees. Just the sound effects and killer soundtrack alone is worth it. Watching it right now on tv. The rrooarrsss from Godzilla are perfect! Second to none! Never heard such awesome sound effects and I dont know what people complain about it. Its a great Hollywood action film even today. There's just so much crap out there. No comparison. This film still stands out and its still great as a popcorn blockbuster. I love the rainy atmosphere like Seattle and making New York look Gothic. Though Im not a big Mathew Broderick Fan he pulls it off nicely. He doesnt go celebrity on it and actually acts. Playing the character perfectly. I also really liked the girl they picked. She's gorgeous!

"Godzilla" (1998) is just a great turn-off-your-brain-and-have-a-blast flick. It has the fun air of Indiana Jones and The Mummy films. It takes the concept of a giant monster attacking a city and goes totally over-the-top, but not to the ridiculous extent of Jackson's "King Kong." Plus, it turns out that the 200-foot tall creature isn't the only menace to the city.

I'd watch this "Godzilla" over the 2014 version any day (although I enjoy that more serious rendition as well).

I can watch his "Kong" and enjoy it, but it's so over-the-top and cartoonish it's like watching a Road Runner cartoon. Remember the absurd brontosaurus stampede? Furthermore, "Godzilla" has a more compelling story and is just all-around more entertaining compared to "Kong," which is unnecessarily overlong and has some tedious sections.

Thats how i felt about it which is why I could never go the distance. Overlong and tedious sections. Plus I hate Brody. He doesnt go with the film or Naomi. This movie sucks and to me Jacksons typically more duds than goods.

For the sake of argument Im going to give a shot and then talk some more trash about it.

Brody is fine in the right role, this just wasn't it. He is definitely not an action star.

I dont mean to sound like an asshole but I never liked him. I liked him in S.O.S a lot but then he broke his nose and went jewish stealing the oscar. I saw him in an episode of punk and I thought he was cool then I noticed he was pretentious. Ive seen him headlining a couple of movies and he just ruins the movies. Some interesting despite of him but he never lifts a movie or makes it better. Thus I pan anything he is in. Strangely I like some of the action movies he's in Like Splice and I thought he was great In Predator though I dont like him. But I generally dont like him and in this movie as you say he didnt fit.

I LOVED the brontosaurus stampede and for the record, I enjoyed this but I enjoyed Kong more.

It can be enjoyed on a cartoon-in-real-life level, which is how I roll with it (the ridiculous brontosaurus sequence, etc.). But -- no matter how you slice it -- those juvenile over-the-top parts destroy any suspension of disbelief.

lol. I though you were talking to me as I too hate that movie. Godzilla is pretty good if you get over the false critiques. I never liked Jackson's version. It never felt like King Kong for me. If you haven't check out Kong Island thats more my Kong.

Godzilla 98: 4/10
Jackson's Kong: 8/10
Skull Island: 9/10

Outside of personal opinion, there is no defense of Godzilla 98. With enough editing, you might be able to cobble together a mediocre Broderick film with no monster at all. Roland Emmerich makes shit movies and this is not one of the exceptions. The exceptions are: Independence Day, The Patriot, and Universal Soldiers. These three exceptions are merely mostly-bad instead of pure garbage.
A scene in Godzilla 98 that is emblematic of Emmerich movie style is when the helicopters are flying around among the skyscrapers close enough to 'zilla to be hit instead of high above them. He writes/directs nonsense.

You forgot The Day After Tomorrow and Stargate. Arent bad.

They went in to shoot from far but given they couldnt hit him they got closer and he also ran away fast and hid. So they had to chase him. 'Zilla plan to lure them and rid 'em.

I consider TDAT and Stargate to be rubbish. Absolutely loved the Stargate series though.

I'm afraid that that helicopter explanation does not hold water.

Look, I am able to enjoy bad movies for the candy center. I love old Godzilla movies. Even the bad ones (sorta). So I know what it is to close one eye for love. I just hate Emmerich's flippancy with realism and outrageous character decision making. He doesn't think that things need to make sense. He is like one of those kinds of irritating people that say "who cares? It's just a movie"

They arent that bad compared to other worst action packed movies out there.
I almost included 2012 but it was too bad too include.
Have yet to see Resurections.

Before they try to get close there's a scene where they sent heat missiles but Gozilla is too cold for the missiles to detect( its cold-blooded). So they have to get closer to try to get him. Also after they attack him after the fish buffet he runs away really fast and hides. They cant find him and he hides really well given around the huge buildings. If they got atop of those huge buildings they'd have a high risk of missing and having collateral damage. The president had already said they caused more damage than the damn thing did. Adding the buildings were too tall for them to even fly over.
I dont see you giving much of explanation to the contrary.

Granted, I think Godzilla had enough other writters, and pull that it wasnt just his say on it.

They could fly above him to see where he is and then attack him from above. You can move in close enough from above. But nope ... Out of range? Abandon you view from above. They didn't even keep a recon copter above. Sour case of director bending reason in the name of an iffy idea.

The buildings were too tall and he hid very well. Hence they couldnt hit him. So what they were going to do? Start shooting missiles like a video game and who cares about the consequences??!!

A helicopter could shoot something in between buildings from far above them. It's really quite simple. The setup in the movie relies on people that can be convinced otherwise.

I didn't like The Day After Tomorrow at all, but consider Stargate an all-time great sci-fi film. I loved the build-up and the humor leading into the journey through the Stargate, and found the entire story fun, compelling, and unpredictable.

As for Godzilla '98, it's entertaining and engaging, but isn't what a Godzilla film is expected to be, which is why I think it gets a lot of the hate it does. People wanted something closer to Toho's fire-breathing monster, and this one was too different. So as a Godzilla film, it sucks, but as a monster movie it's quite good.

Still TDAT at least had some pretty good special effects and there aren't that many movies that are similar.

But Toho is japanese and their aim was to make it americanize to which they succeeded wholly. It was so American it smashed at the box office. I dont think other Godzilla films did so well. If they wanted Toho they could go watch his previous and later films nobody is stopping them and people did go see this in droves. Though it had cgi and kinda dated it was still good and very ahead of its time even now you can compare it as some of the 'zilla scenes were extremely well made. Though it had great graphics its not so easy the updated transfers given its heavily risky atmosphere and all the detail they spent on 'zilla. I think from the get-go it was pretty obvious they werent too concern with a Japanese version of Godzilla but more of great Pop Corn Summer Monster MOvie and in that they completely succeeded. Not to mention despite the hate all the inspirations it has caused for an easily example Cloverfield which is nothing like Toho's.

I agree-- Godzilla looked real. It was a much better movie in terms of effects than anything Toho has done before or since. In all honesty, I found nothing wrong with the '98 Godzilla other than the monster not being Godzilla-ish enough. I think Emmerich went for science and reality in lieu of the over-the-top absurdity of the Japanese films, so no atomic breath, no utter invulnerability, etc. This Godzilla was basically a super-sized lizard. The acting, story, continuity, effects, and pretty much everything about the film was spot on. The Japanese movies are more *fun* in their special cheesy, way, and the original, 1954 film is a masterpiece in its own right, but Godzilla '98 doesn't deserve the hate it gets from some corners.

Yea very real. The 4k version must be stunning but people complain it looks like a lizard yea well thats how probably a real Godzilla would look like if it were alive today. Fuck! Godzilla wasnt made till the 1954's so it cant be the bullshit dinosaur they made up in the movies. Its also radioactive so its recent. It makes much more sense for it to be lizard than a dinosaur. I did some research of Godzilla yesterday and not all of Godzilla have retro flare breathe, invulnerability, or hate humanity. Its very inconsistent but this Godzilla made a lot of sense in a lot of ways yet they bash the shit out of it though it sold like crazy and most people coming out of the theater probably had a blast. Sorry it isnt Japanese idiots but again if you want the Japanese version nobody is stopping you from seeing its 20 films. Where its just a guy in a costume with 4 toy buildings around it and absolutely no coherent story. This one is at least original and had they made him invuneriable americans wouldve hated it as Americans have to destroy everything. Topelado wanted to understand the beast and preserve it but what did they do try to kill it every chance they could and took him down over some trump up charge of a stupid tape. The damn thing never purposely attacked humanity but all they wanted to do with kill the thing and kill its babies without any logic. There was a line that went with this when the president said they did more damage than the damn thing did.

If they had made it any more Godzillish by a sec. they wouldve made it Japanese Americans would've complained they didnt understand it. It mightve gotten acclaimed but it wouldve bombed at the box office for sure.

I havent seen the supposedly bad 2014 version but been wanting to. In fact I almost saw it yesterday or today. A friend of mine said it was awful and a lot worst than this version.

It is a great turn-off-your-brain-and-have-blast flick but it is also very interesting. If you follow the plot you can tell they put a lot of thought into it more than you'd think( radiations, nuclear attacks, bosses hitting in reporters) but I couldnt stop laughing and it was such a fun ride.

It does go totally over-the-top but in a fun way. This film was based on the idea of a ride. Like if you go to Disney's Theme Parks this is the experience but they have it better because they have the gadgets. This is just film and audio. Watching this film I cant help but wonder why they havent taken it out in 3D. There's a 3D scene every other second.

I hated Jackson's King Kong. I could never finish because they killed it. Noami was one of the worst choices not that I ever liked her to begin with. Though I liked Jack Black he was awful in this. I couldnt stop looking at it. Kong looked completely cgi and I didnt like he's dynamic with Naomi. Jessica Lange was a million times better and the Cgi in Planet of the apes was a million times better. Kong Island was awesome though and way more my type of Kong. If you havent you gotta see it. It has a feel like Godzilla. I loved it so much that I give film of the year. It also has heavily that Disney theme feel to it.

I haven't seen the 2014 version since it came out. I gave it a 6/10. Here's what I wrote in my review:

While the colossal creature fights don't occur until the second half of the movie, the CGI is great, as is the all-around filmmaking. There's nothing wrong on this front.

It's the human characters and their story where the film is mediocre. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays the main protagonist, Elizabeth Olsen his wife, and Bryan Cranston his father. Also on hand are Ken Watanabe, David Strathairn, Richard T. Jones and Sally Hawkins. These actors are all perfectly competent, but the story-as-written never makes 'em click as interesting characters. As such, they're bland. And, since the first half of the movie is focused on the build-up to the monsters, it's more boring than compelling.

Still, it is Godzilla and there are some memorable disaster-oriented moments.

I saw "Skull Island" in the theater and enjoyed it. It's definitely superior to Jackson's "Kong" and a worthy entry in the Kong non-series, although it's not on the level of "Godzilla '98."

I cant read your review as I havent seen it and dont want any spoilers.

I wouldve enjoyed to watch it in the theaters. Its a great theater movie. I thought it was a major worthy entry and supposedly more to come as after the end credits they hinted to a sequel just in case you left early.

But the cgi is truly spectacular in this. I love the fighting with the other monsters. The story is cute and has a lot of laughs. A lot of the Kong scene were spectacular and felt like you were right there with Kong. I saw this on bluray by the way and they did a number on the Graphics. This Kong also looked way more real and acted more like a real Gorilla. Totally awesome. I enjoyed the cast as well.

On this one I think Kong Island is better than Godzilla but I also enjoy the premise of Kong more especially when they mix it with the girl that for whatever reason Kong Island Skips.

This is a great blockbuster that's a staple of the 90's.

Shoot the Mayor alone is worth the watch.

Its strangely is a stable of the 90's and the end of the millienium too!

I didnt like the fat guy. I think the only one guy I liked was the camera guy. lol. when the Godzilla steps on him is for the centuries!!! I probably shitted too watching it.
