Not much, at first. I had a similar reaction to yours the first time I saw it.
But after reading some of Thompson's work for a class I was taking and becoming more familiar with him, I re-watched and began to appreciate it. Depp's portrayal of him is just uncanny.
Then I also started to like it as a "buddy movie" and as a historical piece about Las Vegas, one of my favorite places.
A very strange "buddy movie", but I guess it grows on you, like a fungus. I like Vegas too, but I seldom gamble.
