One of the worst movies I've ever seen

I hate this movie. It's terrible to begin with. For some reason Cusac thought he should act with his mouth open (once again he proves to perform only in the worst movies), the Minerva character was so stereotypical and hard to watch not even talking about the Lady Chablis way too long (and enormously annoying) part. Then again in the middle of this crap most characters turn out to be gay.
On the other hand Kevin Spacey was good as always.

Clint's movie was shockingly amateurish, unusually lousy despite (or because) of the material.

A&E did a documentary show about it, also in 1997, and it was waaay better than the movie.

I almost wish Clint had done it that way: kind of a cinéma vérité approach where interviews with locals about the murder or about voodoo were mixed in with the re-enactments with the actors and Kevin Spacey.

That would have given the movie the organic tone it totally lacked.

The blonde bitch, Eastwood's daughter, was more pointless and annoying. The Transexual was funny and amusing! Honestly her scenes were my favourite parts.

reply

Glad to hear this. I borrowed it from a local library but was reluctant to watch it because of it's rather low rating of IMDB.com.

reply

It's a slow paced wannabe Southern Gothic crime drama with some interesting vignettes. But yeah, the central mystery really isn't that interesting.

reply

Huh, I thought it was great at the time. Might have to watch it again and reevaluate now though.

reply

The book was actually great, a terrific read that made you laugh while drawing you into the tense central drama. The movie totally failed to capture everything that made the book enjoyable.

Clint Eastwood was the worst possible director for this story. He has no understanding of humor, eccentricity, or gay life.

reply

You know, I don't think I knew Clint Eastwood was the director when I watched it.

reply

But doesn't it explain a lot about the film?

reply

Well it's been a long time since I saw it, so I couldn't really say.

reply

And if you haven't read the book you won't know how much good stuff is missing.

You know, don't watch the film again, read the book! It's a really entertaining read, even if it's not 100% factually accurate.

reply

I liked it.

At leasr three movies were in the book. Eastwood should have made the movie about the murder rather than jamming all three together.

Odd choice for someone eith his talent.
