Anybody else think Kim Bassinger didn't deserve the Oscar?

After watching it 5 or 6 times I still don't think she was that great or fantastic. She wasn't horrible. But I didn't think she did anything amazing in it. I personally think it should've gone to Gloria Stuart in Titanic. This seems like the stupid old we're sorry we snubbed you Oscar. Like Jack Palance winning for City Slickers or Tommy Lee Jones winning for the Fugitive. Of course most people already know Gloria Stuart was the best performance that year.

When the Story Lady tells us about the naughty boy who blew up his goldfish.

Yeah I don't get it. It wasn't a bad performance but it was nothing special and the role didn't involve much "acting". Honestly there was probably more acting of emotions and such in her role in Batman.

The only reasons I can think of are that it was a great film and a means of honouring the film in another acting category (not that she was any more worthy than Pearce or Crowe mind you), and I suppose, and I could be wrong, it was a departure from her usual type of roles or films she stars in. She's never been known for serious performances like this one.

absolutely honoring the film was probably head on.

Truthful her character was average at best. The movie was top notch movie making. They should make more movies like this.

reply

She was adequate, but I've always thought of her as a stiff of an actress and this performance was no exception.

reply

Julianne Moore deserved it for Boogie Nights imo, much more impressive performance.

JUST THE BUSH ALONE.

It wasn't a great year for female performances. Personally, I didn't find Gloria Stewart's performance much better.

Kim Basinger won an Oscar for "LA Confidential" but her career went nowhere

I still feel Kim Basinger made a huge mistake by taking a Sabbatical right after that win. She should have taken advantage of the initial hype. Instead, she did not work for 2 years and came back with two movies, I Dreamed of Africa and Bless the Child. Both movies flopped and so did her career.

She has worked now and then but she was never again the huge movie star she once was in the early 90s. I remember how popular she was in those early years. She and Alec Baldwin were the it couple.

Underrated actress. She has given some good performances. Loved her in The Natural and The Door in the Floor (the only decent film she got post-Oscar).

Sometimes Academy Awards are given to people for talent/craft.

Sometimes they're given out as condolences.

But most of the time they're given out as the result of a kind of backstage gamesmanship we (the public) don't see.

Minnie Driver was nominated because she was in Good will hunting and Harvey Weinstein knew how to package a film.

I haven't seen In and out so I can't comment on Joan Cusack's performance.

Nominating Gloria Stuart was a stunt.

Julianne Moore was excellent in Boogie nights. But her nomination was about talent, not politics and LA Confidential was better politicked, so Basinger won.

reply

No.

And FUCK Titanic and everyone associated with it. LA Confidential was the best picture of the year.
