Did Batman fans think that this movie was ridiculing the source material?

Hence, why this movie is so despised. I mean the way that Bane is treated is kind of the epitome of this feeling. There's also the scene where Alicia Silverstone tells George Clooney that she's Batgirl and Clooney shoots back by saying that calling yourself "BatGIRL" isn't very politically correct. It's like the movie is out and out saying that the name Batgirl is stupid.

I guess I felt that way at the time but certainly not anymore, I love this film and it is an accurate adaptation of the Batman comics from the silver age I believe.

This is the last good Batman Film afterwards we move into all this 21st Century Batman Drivel

I completely agree. I have to amend my previous comment, I never felt this was a parody or making fun of the source material, not even in 1997, I was embarrassed for it at the time because I thought it was lame but now I understand it perfectly, it's a faithful adaptation of the period of comics in which these characters originated, Batgirl, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, if you read their origin stories it's just like the movie so they did their research. On top of that you have the incredible production values, the music, the costumes, etc, this has become one of my favorite movies.

People trash it but the modern comic book films, like Thor Ragnarok don't even let you invest in the characters because everything is undermined by some stupid jokes. This film is not that.

Wasn't Batgirl the daughter of commissioner Gordon? In this movie she was Alfred's niece and her origin story consisted of finding the Batcave and talking to an artificial intelligence version of Alfred. I admit I never read the origin stories but I'm pretty sure her's wasn't that.

reply

no it wasn't but the tone is the same. Just go read them, look at the panels, even the action sequences are similar to them.

reply

Nah I'll pass. I like B&R like I enjoy The Room...for reasons other than were intended by the cast and crew.

Aside from all Mr. Freeze's ice puns and forcing his henchmen to watch the Snow Miser scenes from Year Without a Santa Claus, this movie featured a Bat credit card. I'm not denying Marvel movies have a lot of humor but this movie had tons. The big difference is that with the humor in the Marvel movies most people actually found the humor funny.

reply

Yeah, this movie is way over-the-top and far goofier than anything seen in the Marvel movies.

Think in Schumacher's day a lot of people would treat characters like Babe and Batgirl like that because it's a kid's thing. Best to hire a young hot shot director for a superhero movie.

B&R does feel very LGBT in its approach.

I wouldn't say that. For myself, it felt like all the ...evolution in the subject established in the first two movies (i.e. You can do a more serious (not serious but MORE serious) than the TV show) was wiped away and we were back to campyness. And that's not a slam on the 60's show....but you have to remember we also had the god awful TV movies in between the TV show and the movies that WERE awful.
