This song is very similar to Freddy and the Dreamers "How Do You Do (the things you do to me)? Everything is very similar: to its "snappy" beat to the dress of its singers and the song's message. I wouldn't be surprised if Hanks used it as a starting point

The Previous post should reference Gerry and The Pacemakers not Freddie and The Dreamers.

Such a shame the song didn’t win the Oscar, which would have given this lovely little film some much-deserved attention.

It lost the Oscar to You Must Love Me’ from Evita. A nice enough song, but Evita didn’t need another song, whereas That Thing You Do’ simply wouldn’t work or even make sense were the song not so wonderfully infectious.

Pretty good. It does sound like a song that might have been a hit during that heavily Beatles influenced time when the British Invasion was starting.

The man who wrote this song, Adam Schlesinger, passed away April 2020.

He was a genius.

Along with his friend, Chris Collingwood (another genius), they formed the band Fountains of Wayne.

It's a very catchy song

reply

Not that great a song. It makes the movie worse that they play it so often.

I remember it getting airplay but I think the studio paid major radio markets to play the song as a form of payola disguised as ad buying time.

The song itself was boring and very standard, and I didn't recall it ever playing again after the movie ran its course in theaters.
