Why was this made so weird and trippy?

What was with the cuts to black and white, the sitcom laugh track, the weird colors and cuts, it was like someone tripping out on acid made this movie. It felt like some weird music video more than a movie.

I was honestly excited to watch this for the first time last night, i heard alot about it and thought the plot sounded interesting about two lunatics going on a killing spree, and one of my favorite actors Woody Harrelson was the star, i thought for sure i was gonna love this. But then i started watching it....and right off the bat i could tell i was in for some weird artsy fartsy movie.

Soon as it got to the sitcom part where Rodney Dangerfield was a nasty abusive pedophile as a sitcom father i was ready to turn it off, like seriously wtf was that? I couldn't make it past that.

Such a shame such an interesting story with amazing actors was ruined by bad editing and weird experimental film making.

I disagree with it being bad editing. Stone has said that he was influenced by MTV. The movie isn't really about Mickey and Mallory. The movie is about the media's sensationalizing murders and almost making them out to be celebrities, as well a news doing the same with every story just to get ratings. It's the flash and glam of the tabloids which hasn't gotten any better in the almost 30 years since this film was made.

Totally agree. The movie is reflective pulp fiction. It is very similar to House of 1000 corpses where the in your face editing and flashy stylistic choices are made to sensationalize the material.

Well, back in the 1990s, people were still interested in interesting filmmaking.

The different styles portrayed are meant to represent the different viewpoints that the story was being told in. It's been a while, so i don't remember which was which, but it's told from Mickey and Mallorys view, the medias view, and them what really happened. Watch it with that in mind, and it's clear which is which. Ultimately, it's a highly stylized movie, so it's meant to be interesting for the sake of it.

Sorry it wasn't mundane and dull enough for your simplistic and narrow sensibilities, that's too bad.
