Let's talk about the period in the 90s when Sony Pictures rebooted the Universal monsters as prestige dramas.

It only managed to get as far as Frankenstein, sadly. Even though I did love both Dracula and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

And Night of the Living Dead, if you want to count that (granted, NOTLD was public domain and not Universal Monsters)

I actually just watched Ken Branagh's Frankenstein for the first time a few weeks ago. I was actually surprised by how good it is. While it's not a perfect film, it's certainly a good one -- well-directed, great production design, beautifully shot and it's certainly far more true to Shelley's novel than the '31 picture is.

Having now seen it, I have to say it's under-appreciated.

They also had Mary Reily, which stared Julia Roberts and was a Jekyl and Hyde movie.

Not to mention a werewolf redo with Jack Nicholson in "Wolf" (1994).

I am watching the video linked above. Looks like they mentioned them.

I remember that movie but didn't know it had anything to do with Jeckyl and Hyde. I might have to check it out.

Honestly, if Universal's aborted Dark Universe was more in the vein of these movies, I think it would be really cool.
