Icons Unearthed explained why this movie SUCKED

The writer was a nihilist douche who hated Billy Dee Williams and Vicky Vale. He also wanted to show Knox killed violently. Peter Gruber and John Peters didn't keep the writer and Tim Burton "in check" so BR became a disgusting mess. It's only fondly remembered because Michelle Pfeiffer is universally loved. Fact.

OR...IT'S A FUN FLICK...GREAT PERFORMANCES AND A COOL VIBE...NOSTALGIA DEFINITELY PLAYS A PART...AS DOES THE LIMITED TECH OF THE TIME...BUT IT IS PRETTY FUCKING ENTERTAINING AND I WILL GIVE IT A 7/10

Sounds like I completely disagree with Icons Unearthed about one of my favourite Batman films. This movie dives head-first into the Gothic Gotham and I love it. Plus, the movie dives into masks and personnae as a main theme and it perfectly ties in and captures Batman's essence.

reply

Absolutely. Batman Returns ties as my favourite Batman film of all. I'll take it over B89 any day. 9/10

reply

The only real problem this movie has is that the plot is rather messy with too much going on. And they could at least have done some foreshadowing of Robin.

reply

Oh they DID...with MARLON WAYANS as Robin before they came to their senses and removed his scenes, according to Icons Unearthed.

reply

That was a horrible idea, but I don't think they ever filmed any scenes with him.

reply

March of the (Missile Packing) Penguins.

I saw Daniel Waters on the Icons Unearthed show on Batman Returns and he too gave me the vibe that he was something of a douchy edgelord. Plus, by several accounts the original screenplay that Waters wrote for Batman Returns before Wesley Strick was brought in sucked.

I misread your post for a second and thought you were talking about John Waters, and I think it would still suck, but I definitely wanted to read John Waters' script for Batman "BDSM" Returns.

reply

It might actually be my favorite Batman film.

It's Tim Burton at his peak, it's a superbly gothic Gotham with a hint of comic book styling, almost fantastical. Compare it to Nolan's Batman films (The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises) where it feels like it's taking place in New York or something. To be fair Batman Begins is more inline with a gothic Gotham, that's actually one of my biggest criticisms of that trilogy, the completely different aesthetics for Gotham between BB and the Dark Knight duo.

Then with the recent The Batman. That's a dull and beige Gotham city. A bit too drab and drained of color and life. The long run time and moody Nirvana music just add to a general dullness and sombreness of proceedings. Burton has a lot more fun with the subject matter. Also the costumes of batman, catwoman and the penguin have so much more flair in Burton's film. Reeves really loves a minimalist, grungy look.

The Schumacher films are very comic book but a bit too silly and childish. Honestly the first two Burton films strike a great balance and Returns has a bit more entertainment value than Batman I feel, leaving it pretty much top of the lot.
