I honestly don't know why Jason Alexander was cast in this film

Jason Alexander is just another comedic actor from Seinfeld as George. He made that role good for goofs and laughs. Pretty Woman is not like a comedy with a lot of satire jokes. I wouldn't compare Pretty Woman in the same genre. With that said, Jason Alexander's role was entirely different than like we see him act on TV with Jerry, Elaine, Kramer, Newman. Therefore to this day it feels odd to me to see JA in a more serious role. He would never pull a stunt like he did to Julia Roberts in the show.

As a Seinfeld fan too, I know where you're coming from.

But remember Seinfeld was 1989. This was 1990 so he was barely known. Probably filming this and season 1 at the same time.

Actually, there was only one Seinfeld episode in 1989, which
was the Pilot and back then it was called The Seinfeld Chronicles and Julia Louis Dreyfuss and her character Elaine weren't even on the show yet. The rest of the Seinfeld episodes didn't come out until after Pretty Woman was released in late March, 1990 (the first Seinfeld episode in which it was actually called Seinfeld and had Julia Louis-Dreyfuss in it was April, 1990, almost a month after Pretty Woman was released). Hence, the George character was barely known (if at all, very few people saw the Seinfeld Pilot which aired during the summer of 1989) when Pretty Woman came out. I suppose if I saw Pretty Woman for the first time after watching several seasons of Seinfeld it might have been weird for me to see Jason Alexander playing the Phil Stuckey character.

You need to separate actors from their roles.

Alexander is a professional and was excellent in this. I was pleasantly surprised at his acting range.

reply

Exactly. He proved he's got a range that extends beyond Seinfeld..

reply

Actors like to play different roles. They get bored always playing the same character.

I hate Jason Alexander and his character in this is such a suckass.

reply

Apparently he played the role well. We're not supposed to like the character.

reply

Exactly. I'm really not understanding the OP point anyways. Actors do more than 1 gig so why shouldn't it be any different with Jason back then? odd topic is odd.

I thought he did quite well in this film - played a villain of sorts, sure, but he played him well. Again, I'd say most actors did extremely well in this film - when that happens, the credit actually goes to the director, because only a decent director can pull that off - usually.

He says he was spat on and beaten by people on the street following the release of this movie - because... apparently people were equally dumb in 1990's.

it was good for him and his career to do a 180 type character from george, who was probably slowly becoming a popular relatable character at that point. it showed us that george was just another character and that he was quite talented.
