Gus Van Sant's best film

Does anyone else agree?

I'm gonna watch it again on Amazon PRime. I saw it when it came out and I was in college where Gus came to visit our film school and he gave a Q&A and lecture. I remember liking the film and finding it very gritty yet also subtle and sublime. It's one of Matt Dillon's better indy films.

I think it's easily Gus Van Sant's and Matt Dillon's best film.

It's great!

reply

No. To Die For is his best.

reply

I agree I think it’s a masterpiece!

I need to see it again. Actually didn't like it on first watch, but I'm guessing it's shot and edited different enough I might have to get used to it.
Since To Die For was mentioned, I think GVS's style was refined to where he could put his stars in the best light, and not have to make a "gritty" film like Drugstore. Cowboy looks like a low-budget over-achiever, which is not a bad thing.

I wholeheartedly agree. It also has one of the best uses of an ending where the main character is shot multiple times and lying in a state of semi-consciousness, his thoughts providing the narration, where his life is in limbo and survival ambiguous.

Many films have used this trope, from Carlito’s Way to In Bruges, but I think DG does it more poetically with a wonderful ironic twist: he spent so long trying to get clean and now he’s on his way to the biggest pharmacy in town.

Possibly, although Elephant, Milk and Paranoid Park are more or less on the same level.

Matt Dillon’s finest hour, surely - a great performance.

I think Matt Dillon's performance in The House That Jack Built was also great.

reply

I must admit, I haven't seen that one... I'm a little scared to, although I'll force myself to watch it eventually.

reply

One of his best, absolutely.
