Opinions on Season 3?

IMO that was the season when the Simpsons finally found its groove and it's one of my favorite seasons.

It's good.

Explain your favorite episode

I agree that is where the real charm started.

Season 1 & 2 were trying to find "it". Also, there was a bit of a improvement to the animation in season 3 compared to season 2; that helped tremendously as well. It's the little things sometimes that can really boost something up.

The Michael Jackson episode is one of my favorites and Separate Vocations is also hella good.

reply

Its excellent, alot of classic eps in s3 and def the start of the golden era.

Actually, I've long thought this season was crap, I look down the episode list and struggle to find any episodes I feel any strong affection for. Any season that starts off with creepy Michael Jackson voicing a fat white mental patient, credited under a fake "stage" name, has got to suck.
"Homer at the bat" is way overrated and not funny any more.
And it has that AWFUL "Colonel Homer" episode with that annoying singer woman droning on in her stupid "sultry" voice for 30 f__king minutes.

On the upside "Black Widower" is damn hilarious, but it's one of the precious few highlights of this crummy depressing season.
"No sir, I didn't like it".

Seasons 1 & 2 are muuuuch better.

reply

1 and 2 better than 3. Now thats interesting especially 1. I actually can barely get a laugh when I rewatch season one.
Classics from 3 include, TOH 2, Flaming Moe´s, Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk, Radio Bart, Bart the Lover and the aforementioned Homer at the bat. Overrated maybe but definitely still funny.

reply

Okay, the only thing you've got there is that I missed Flaming Moe's.... season 1 is charming and witty with some clever stories. If you struggle to laugh at "There's No Disgrace Like Home" there's something seriously wrong with you. The highlights of season 1 far outweigh the slightly duller or simplistic episodes. It also has that one where marge falls in love with a french bowler, and the last 3 episodes finish off the season with a particularly strong streak. Season 3 only has two great episodes in a much longer season of dullness.

reply

There´s a few particular grievances I have with season one. I really dislike the animation as well as Homer´s voice, which sounded like a bad Walter Matthau impression. The French bowler episode I don´t particularly like nor find funny, that said season 1 still beats season 10 and beyond in a heartbeat, although I have to disagree that Season 3 has only two great episodes. Personally, I don´t think season one has any great episodes and would be surprised if any has made a best episode list but of course that´s just my opinion.

Sorry, I didn´t know it was a crime not to share the same opinion. You do realise that humour is subjective right?

reply

Yes. People are also allowed to have opinions about opinions. That seems to be news to you. I'm simply "subjecting" you to the opinion that yours is awful. :)

reply

And it seems to be news to you that humour is subjective. It may be "awful" but my opinion is at least still shared by the vast majority...

Holy shit! I've never noticed it, but it's EXACTLY like a Walter Matthau impression.

They all poot poot all in their special panties

Dan Castellaneta modeled the original Homer voice after Walter Matthau and he nailed it pretty close. Season 3 is when most shows start to click after fleshing out their characters in the first two seasons. And, yes, I'm one of those that think any season after 8 is horrible.

reply

I'm with the others: season 3 really kicked off the golden age. 1 and 2 were clever and ground breaking, but 3 through 10 are all fabulous, and many funny episodes appear spread out over the next 5 or so. After that, it's OK but not magical like the early years.
