I grew up in the 1980's and I swear that every mom-and-pop VHS rental store had a massive, I mean MASSIVE cardboard cutout of this movie. What the hell?! Did people really go that ape-$h1t over this movie back then?
I almost can't watch it now because I can't get that image out of my head. Talk about successful advertising.
I don’t remember a cutout but I vividly remember staring at the VHS cover whenever I went to the store, the title combined with the imagery were transfixing.
Why did this eccentric, low budget British horror comedy get so much attention? Most people haven’t even heard of it today 🤷🏻♂️
It's weird, quirky and unique... that alone will make it good for some people. Primed for 'cult' status.
I thought it was just alright but no one can deny it's an interesting movie.
Also from what I gather it was never a huge hit, it's always been a slightly obscure flick. So no, I don't think people went 'ape shit' over it in the late 80s.
In a 1999 interview with The AV Club, Hugh Grant recalled that Ken Russell would, following a rather liquid lunch, direct him using language like "Do it how I showed you, you fuckin' cunt!"
I have never heard about this movie, let alone seen it! However the poster is epic. Since it's a foreign film its unlikely that it gathered any momentum here at home.
I don't remember it getting much promotion. It was jus one of the movies on the shelves. It was a good one, though. A little weird and kinky, and of course there was Amanda Donahue. Great casting, there.
