A perfect movie?

As an action movie, it’s hard for me to fathom a way in which it could have been better. It’s just so damn lean.

Is it as perfect an action movie as could be reasonably expected?

reply

Naans, best action movie made was Shainghi Nights

I wouldn’t class it as an action movie, it’s more a sci-fi horror. Much like the Alien series, it has moments of action but the main focus is a horrifying alien creature murdering a small group of people one by one.

It’s good but there are better ones out there

Please continue.

The Terminator, Die Hard, RoboCop, Total Recall, Lethal Weapon, First Blood, Terminator 2, Aliens, Face/Off , etc

All good ones. ☝️

No to Face off that movie aged like milk.

The real reason I love Face/Off so much is because it has two of the most over the top actors of the century trying to outdo each other. What's not to love?

reply

Call the plot preposterous all you want, I won’t argue with you there but I actually could buy Cage was really Travolta and I really could buy that Travolta was Cage. That’s impressive acting.

I saw it when it came out in 1987. I had no idea what to expect. While watching it I was impressed and thought "Wow, it's like a David Drake story..." I was thinking, specifically of a short story in which a small town sheriff tracks an unknown killer which is taking people in his area all on a single night, as I recall. The killer turns out to be a non-humanoid alien that appears to be sport hunting... Of course David Drake wrote a lot of military SF too, so some of his Vietnam/horror/SF came to mind as well.
Overall, I still think the movie is great, just not as gritty and real as David Drake, but that's just me.

The last 30 mins of the movie is awesome.

This movie is visual and aural perfection. None of the sequels could ever rise up to this level. Re-capturing that lightning in a bottle was never going to happen once it was out.
