Why Chozen Was So Skilled In Cobra Kai (When He Wasn't In Karate Kid 2)

Chozen couldn't beat Daniel in The Karate Kid Part II, so why is he depicted as one of the franchise's best fighters in Cobra Kai? What changed?

Well despite losing to Daniel in KKII he was clearly still one of the best fighters around. And furthermore, he was still young then and had a lot of prime years to keep studying in between KKII and Cobra Kai.

Doesn't seem that hard to figure out.

Chozen had no business losing to Daniel at all! Chozen got stronger over the years & all but still should've taken Daniel apart. I guess it was for the sake of the plot to have Daniel win in the end & also Chozen wasn't focused & fueled by confusion & jealousy & betrayal & stuff like that.

I agree with you, especially when the ridiculous "secret technique" that Daniel used to win the fight amounted to wildly flailing his arms in an attempt to land a big haymaker.

I've hated this since I first saw the movie.

The concept of the drum technique was sound. You don't have to be bigger or stronger to block your opponents attack, you just have to move out of the way and deflect it away from you.

When Daniel asked about a counter, I was expecting something a whole lot better and more clever than just "wildly flailing his arms" in order to hit the other dude first before he hits you. It was, in effect, slapping the other guy with an open palm, but with your arms bent, not allowing for full range or striking force. So stupid.

Chozen and Daniel fight the same style so it was hard for him to gain an advantage. Plus Daniel was fighting for his girl, so he had extra motivation. Chozen spent next few decades mastering his craft and teaching karate. Daniel, focused more on his dealership and only recently got back into karate. Chozen simply got better over time.

There's nothing unusual here. I think we all agree that Chozen was written to be a far more deadly fighter than Daniel in KKII. That Daniel beat him was a one-off victory. If they fought 10 times, Chozen would beat him 9 out of 10 times. In fact, up until that final fight, Chozen got the best of Daniel (easily) several times.

Same with Johnny in KKI. Johnny was a far better fighter than Daniel. Daniel won the tournament on a point system fighting a strategic defense style, but in a free for all with no rules, no flags, no stopping between points or leaving the ring, Johnny (and later Mike Barnes) would beat Daniel most times. But these are movies about an underdog who (through goodness and virtue) defeats the superior fighters.

If Chozen was written to be an inferior fighter to Daniel (or Johnny or Barnes), there'd be no fight. But every once in a while, the underdog wins.
