Strange Film

This movie is such an enigma. On the one hand, it is actually very good. On the other, it is actually very bad. I think it has gone down in movie history as the best, worst film ever made.

I get what you mean. I love this movie because it's one of a kind and the tone and excess could only ever work int he 80's. But on the other hand it is so over the top and excessive at times and the characters are played so big it can come across cartoonish at times. It's all part of why I love it but I could understand someone who just thinks it's silly.

Lol, I echo these sentiments. This film is gloriously 80’s — the fashion, tone, overall aesthetic and soundtrack are as “80’s flash” as it can possibly get. Yet, as noted above all this comes off as so excessive that it’s just... cartoonish. And I mean, yeah, there was so much cheese in that decade (excuse me “tough” boomer xoomers who keep crying about the modern world) but in a way this movie works like a parody of that era.

And in terms of the acting… now I get that Al’s performance is iconic, and it is a strong performance in its own right, but honestly if you were to replace Tony and a lot of the characters (but especially Tony) with, say, Looney Tunes, you wouldn’t get such a different movie. Lol. The only thing missing from Scarface, is as Tony lies in the fountain at the end, he suddenly lifts his head up, stares intensely into the camera, raises his arm and goes... “dh-dh-dh-dhat’s all, fooks!”

Call it hyperbolic, but it’s so hard to take the whole movie seriously like many “G’s” and some cinephiles do, ya know? XD

It’s like trashy, hem, elegance.

Lol!
I was saying the same thing the other day.
Scarface is the best bad movie of all time!
Carries another one.
Let’s face it , DePalma makes great bad movies!

I agree, I was born a few years after this movie came out and growing up it already had a legendary status. So when I got around to watching it I was scratching my head a bit. It's good in some places but hilarious in others, I don't think it's as good as most people say it is, but I still put in on every now and then and can appreciate its visual style and soundtrack.

Saw it for the first time earlier this week. Very watchable, but ultimately not very good. Everyone is utterly stupid. For starters, the two lead women. Pfeiffer is somehow persuaded to go along with Tony, but she knows he's a rotten criminal, worse than her previous beau. She must simply have nothing to offer any decent guy. I guess it's the coke that keeps her interested. And his sister leads this smart and chaste life and wants to throw it away for cheap thrills. Just plain dumb.
Then there's Tony, He wants to shelter his Mom and Sis while being an abject criminal. What kind of double standard is that? Pretty much a dumb film.

It's such a bad film. The weird thing is that it probably could've been a pretty good movie if it took itself not so seriously.
