What exactly happened between Indy and Marion?

Early on in the film, when Indy meets Marion at the bar in Nepal, she remarks to him that ‘she was a child, that she was in love. It was wrong and he knew it’.

As many times as I’ve seen this film I’ve always taken this to mean that Indy and Marion had had some sort of fling in the past. I always felt that he was maybe too old for her though and this was the reason that her father, Dr. Abner Ravenwood, didn’t approve. Was this why Indy and her father had a ‘falling out’ ?

Anyone got any ideas?

I think he hit it and run.

^^Basically this.

I bought the book two years after the movie was released and it had like one and a half pages of what happened between them. Yes, she was too young for him (I think he had finished College working with Abner and she was in high school, probably underage, but they never told); yes, her father didn't approve, they did it anyway; he had to leave to do his Indiana Jones things and she got heartbroken. Her father never forgave him (even when he was his star student and assistant).

She did not get pregnant but on those times (beginning of the 20th century) that kind of relationships were not condoned by the high society (Abner was an acclaimed professor).

Ok thanks.

I would say an adult male banging a high school girl is frowned upon more today by all stratum of society.

My thoughts:

Indy was the top student under Dr. Ravenwood at the University of Chicago. After graduation he did his first work with him, and went on his first adventures. He also learned of Ravenwood's dream of finding the Ark of the Covenant, which in a way reminded him of his fathers obsession with the Holy Grail. During this time, Indy met Marion, who as all the school girls did, had a major crush on him. And as she grew older and more into a woman, she finally caught Indy's eye, and he gave into the temptation, perhaps it was on an expedition with her father. She thought it was true love, and he was happy to find a new way to pass the time on long trips. Upon their return, Ravenwood learns of the affair and is livid at Indy. After an intense screaming match he fires Indy and Indy fears that his reputation has been ruined and he'll never be hired again. Luckily for Indy, he has already built a strong reputation and the legendary artifact seeker Dr. Marcus Brody is looking for not only a professor at Marshall College, but a protege to continue the work that he has done, since he is becoming to old to go on dangerous expeditions. Marcus had heard about what had happened with Marion, but decided Indy was worth taking the risk on. The two of them team up on some great adventures, and then eventually Marcus has to stop going on them, and Indy heads them up on his own.

Marion had hoped that Indy would send for her to join him in Connecticut, but that call never came. She realized that she was used and exploited by an older man, and becomes bitter at Indy. And the bitterness grows every time her father hauls her around the world looking for treasure. Perhaps if that call had come, and Indy asked her to come to Connecticut and marry him, then Ravenwood would have eventually forgiven him and they would have reconciled. But since the call never came, then Ravenwood never forgave Indy for not only betraying his trust, but for hurting his daughter.

Another Note:

Brody was also willing to hire Indy because he was an old friend of Henry Jones Sr. And even though the two of them barely spoke, it was the least he could do for an old friend.

Yeah. After growing up that bothered me. Though to be fair he may have been 20 and she 16. Not saying it is right just that that is less bad than say a 30 year old dating a 16 year old.

The guy who directed Leon the proffessional, a few years before he made it, actually had a sexual relationship with a 14 year old girl when he was in his 30s and never had charges brought against him.

I thought he left her at the alter.
