One of the best yes and one of my favourite movies, BUT Fury Road is just as good.

Action is really not my genre but Mad Max 2 is excellent - and I agree, far superior to Fury Road, which I find one of the most inexplicably overpraised films of recent years.

The Road Warrior also had extremely stiff competition in the realm of action and sci-fi films. That year you also had The Thing, ET, Blade Runner, Star Trek II, Poltergeist, Tron, and Conan the Barbarian. Great year! By comparison, Mad Max Fury Road seemed all the better because action movies had turned to shit by then. I think Fury Road is a very good and entertaining film, but it shines mainly due to the relatively weak competition over the prior couple of decades. It was a breath of fresh air that was a bit overrated because of that.

I will likely never rewatch Fury Road; once was enough.

Mad Max 2 is a timeless classic with unbelievably tense action scenes and an awesome pace. It's an all-around perfect film for what it aims to be.

Fury Road was both bloated and barren, which is the worst kind of action film to be.

But you're 100% correct that the competition is so terribly anemic that Fury Road looked "amazing" to a lot of people starved for a half-way decent action film.
