the hockey world has embraced this movie

and I don't see why as it is not exactly a postive movie about hockey.

How many hockey movies are there? Miracle on Ice and the Mighty Ducks franchise and Slap Shot?

IMHO, Miracle isn't really that good -- I live in Minnesota and saw Herb Brooks and all the U of MN Gophers from that team actually play NCAA hockey, and it seemed off in too many ways. Ducks is almost a kids movie.

Slap Shot actually seems to better capture the zen of 1970s hockey, almost better than any sporting movie does for its sport. Plus it has tons of fighting, always a hockey fan favorite. If you go to games now its not hard to find *someone* wearing a pro-grade replica Chiefs jersey, usually with "HANSON" as the name on the back.
